Since 1995 Aram Bartholl lives and works in Berlin. In his art work he thematizes the relationship of net data space and every day life. “In which form does the network data world manifest itself in our everyday life? What comes back from cyberspace into physical space? How do digital innovations influence our everyday actions?”
His art work has been shown on international art festivals such as Ars Electronica, Transmediale Berlin or Futuresonic Manchester. Furthermore he participated in exhibitions at TENT Niederlande, VOORUIT Belgium, Eyebeam New York, Enemy Gallery Chicago, Total Museum of Contemporary Art Seoul, Australian Centre for Photography Sydney, eARTS Shanghai, LABORAL Spanien and Videotage Hong Kong. In more than 30 lectures and workshops Aram Bartholl presented his work at conferences at universities.
Aram Bartholl studied architecture at the University of the Arts UdK Berlin and graduated there in 2001 with the thesis “Bits on Location”. This work also won him the Browserday competition in the same year. In 2007 he got an honorable mention by Transmediale and won the 17th Viedo award Bremen. For his project “Sandbox Berlin” Bartholl received a project grand of the cultural Senat Berlin as well as for 2008 he was supported by a full year working grant by Stiftung Kunstfonds Germany.
Aram Bartholl is a permanent member of the “Urban Media Salon” founded by Mirjam Struppek and visits regularly the annual Congress of the Chaos Communication Club Berlin. From 2001-2004 Aram Bartholl has been working as a freelance concept creator and media designer for MVRDV, DMC Vienna, Fraunhofer Institut Fokus Berlin , Institut for Electronic Business und City & Bits, among others.

Aram Bartholl ist ein jünger deutscher Künstler, welcher 1972 in Bremen geboren ist und seit 1995 in Berlin lebt. In Berlin absolvierte er 2001 erfolgreich den Diplom-Ingenieur Studiengang an der UdK. Aram Bartholl ist Mitglied des ‘Urban Media Salons’ Berlin als auch Mitglied der, in New York gegründeten, Künstlergruppe ‘Free Art and Technology Lab’ aka ‘F.A.T. Lab’. Er nimmt jährlich an dem Kongress des Chaos Computer Clubs CCC teil und unterhält Kontakte im Bereich der Netzpolitik und Internetbranche. In seinen Arbeiten untersucht Aram Bartholl das Verhältnis von Netz-Daten-Welt und Alltag-Lebens-Raum mit all seinen dazugehörigen Fragen und Probelem! Ganz gut erkennbar ist es zum Beispiel an den letzten Installationen wie deaddrops und map. Bei deaddrops werden irgendwo auf der Welt, USB-Sticks eingebaut/verbaut wie z.B. in einer Fuge der Hauswand. Und dient als öffentliches Sharingsystem, jeder kann seinen Laptop anschließen und Daten runter und raufladen. Map hingegen beschäftigt sich mit der roten Kartenmarkierung von Google Maps. Z.B. wenn ich ein Restaurant AAA im Ort YYY suche, dann erscheinen viele rote Markierungen welche jeweils mit einem Buchstaben, beginnend von A, durchnummeriert sind. Und so eine Markierung setzt Aram Bartholl im öffentlichen Raum um, dann steht ein solch mehrere Meter großes rotes “A”-Symbol in Stettin, Berlin und in Taipei.

Aram Bartholl (* 27. Dezember 1972 in Bremen) ist deutscher Konzept- und Medienkünstler. Er lebt und arbeitet seit 1995 in Berlin.
Aram Bartholl studierte Architektur an der Universität der Künste Berlin und schloss dort als Diplom-Ingenieur 2001 mit der Arbeit Daten am Ort ab. Mit dieser Arbeit gewann er auch den Browserday Wettbewerb 2001. Während des Studiums absolvierte er ein neunmonatiges Praktikum in dem Architekturbüro MVRDV Rotterdam. Von 1996 bis 2000 war Bartholl Mitglied der Künstler-/Architekturgruppe „Freies Fach“ (heute AnArchitektur) welche bekannt ist für ihre Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum. Für die Arbeit Random Screen erhielt Bartholl 2007 eine ehrenwerte Erwähnung der Transmediale Berlin und gewann den 17. Videokunstpreis Bremen mit dem Konzept für die Arbeit Sociial. Für das Projekt Sandbox Berlin erhielt er 2007 eine Projektförderung der Berliner Senatskanzlei für Kulturelle Angelegenheiten und für das Jahr 2008 ein einjähriges Arbeitsstipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds Deutschland. Im Frühjahr 2009 absolvierte er eine dreimonatige Residenz am Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam und entwickelte dort mit Hilfe des Lab-Teams die Arbeit Tweet Bubble Series.
Bartholl wird vertreten durch die Galerien Berlin | Frankfurt und xpo gallery Paris. Er ist Mitglied des Urban Media Salon Berlin (initiiert von Mirjam Struppek) und Mitglied der von Evan Roth und James Powderly gegründeten Künstlergruppe F.A.T. – Free Art and Technology Lab in New York.

Laureato in architettura nel 2001 alla Berlin University of the Arts riceve premi e riconoscimenti che acquistano valore pensando alla giovane età dell’artista. Fin dagli studi universitari si è potuta notare l’impronta “digitale” impressa alle sue esposizioni.

Le Net Art. Pour certains, c’est une aberration, pour d’autres, un divertissement un peu puéril. Pour le commun des mortels, ce n’est, ni plus ni moins, qu’un grand mystère. Ou un truc de geek incompréhensible.
Prenons donc quelques minutes pour présenter le travail, à la fois original, inventif et éloquent, de l’artiste allemand Aram Bartholl. Même s’il ne peut pas véritablement prétendre au nom de “net artiste” (le net art désignant à l’origine les pratiques artistiques sur internet), il flirte avec ce courant en proposant une réflexion particulièrement pertinente sur la grande toile et ses ressources, à l’heure où Facebook, Twitter, Skype ou Google font partie intégrante de nos vies.
Pour faire court, disons que ce petit génie s’amuse à confronter le monde réel et le monde numérique, en transposant dans le premier des éléments propres au second. Ses créations, à la fois rigolotes et ingénieuses, nous interrogent sur nos pratiques de web-addicts.
