“There is much to support the view that it is clothes that wear us and not we them; they mold our hearts, our brains, our tongues to their liking.” -Virginia Woolf. Uniforms group people in simplified versions of our social strata and take away our identity and individuality. In my transparent suit, I wanted to break the rigid impositions of the formal suit. Therefore, I juxtaposed the suit of a businessman and the naked body.

Yoon is an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Yoon participated in the fellowship programs at the Kyoto University of Art and Design in Japan and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia. He has exhibited his works in Renwick Gallery, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Brattleboro Museum, Hunter College, and Chungju International Craft Biennale in Korea. His work is in the collection at Smithsonian American Art Museum, and West Collection.

Born in Korea in 1976 and currently living in Richmond Virginia, Bohyun Yoon is an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Yoon is interested in the invisible properties of glass (transparency, refraction, and distortion), and continuously explore ways of making those properties visible. These invisible but real properties of glass are an appropriate medium to explore hidden aspects of societal conventions and stereotypes. He exposes socially constructed notions of race, class, and gender by combining images of the human body with materials that possess invisible properties.

Yoon received two MFAs from both Rhode Island School of Design and Tama Art University in Japan. He participated in the fellowship programs at the Kyoto University of Art and Design in Japan and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia. He is a recipient of the Excellence Prize of Song Eun Art, the S&R Washington Award, and the Hayward Prize for Fine Arts. His work has been included in several important national and international exhibits including “40 under 40 Craft Future” at Renwick Gallery in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington DC; “Playing with Fire: 50 Years of Contemporary Glass” at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC; “Hand +Made: the Performative Impulse in Craft” at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston Texas; and Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea. He has also exhibited at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont; Brattleboro Museum in Vermont; Hunter College in New York; Brown University in Rhode Island; Collection Gallery in Paris. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, West Collection, and Song Eun Art Space. His work can be found in catalogs that were produced for several of the exhibitions mentioned above as well as in the following publications: Cacao Magazine (Moscow issue 11, Love) Taiwan, Cornell Journal of Architecture 9: (Mathematics), The Drama Review (Volume 56, Number 4) MIT Press, Doppelganger_Images of The Human Being in Germany, and New Glass Review 25, 34.

一塊塊的殘肢,渾沌地漂浮在半空中,被鋼絲線看似隨意的懸吊,卻在光線照射之下變了模樣。
Yoon Bo-Hyun曾表示,在創作過程中,「我砍碎、摧毀這些玩偶,然後將零碎的它們拼湊成人類混噸的模樣。」

Artist Statement
My work poses the question: how does reality becomes exquisitely animated by certain social control systems such as politics, mass media, technology, science, and etc. It is my artistic goal to reveal how human beings are fragile and delicate in these social environments. By living in Korea, Japan and the U.S, I have first-hand experience in diverse social systems and have come to view my life experiences as raw material for my research. With my research in mind, my art utilizes the body as the tool for an intensive investigation of the public and private; examining the relationship between how people understand their body and how this understanding represents themselves in the greater context.
Currently, I am curious about human perception developing parallel with the ever-evolving progression of technological world. Thus, I question technology’s relationship to reality and illusion; asking what is reality? My work takes advantage of illusion to explore and answer this question, and often my artistic materials consist of the body and mirrors. I use mirrors for integrating reality and illusion. I cut, I extend, I distort, I reconstruct, and I fragment the body to create a chaotic image of a human.

Bohyun Yoon – современный корейский художник – создал необычную инсталляцию под названием «Fragmentation», посвященную клонированию человека и космической хирургии. В ней он попытался подчеркнуть как плюсы этих новых направлений науки, так и их минусы. Получилось, конечно, нечто спорное, но все-таки оригинальное.
Bohyun Yoon взял двух моделей, мужчину и женщину, раздел их, положил на стол и обложил зеркалами, «разбив» их тела на части.
Получившаяся инсталляция как бы умножает количество частей тела в несколько раз. Это, по задумке автора, показывает плюсы клонирования. Человечество сможет получить практически бесконечное количество органов для трансплантации. В то время как сейчас больные люди годами стоят в очередях на пересадку сердца, почек, печени и т.д.

Но, с другой стороны, при таком подходе к человеческому телу, люди станут обезличенными. Они будут восприниматься лишь как набор органов, которые можно воспроизвести в любой момент.

El trabajo de este artista Coreano, cuestiona ciertos sistemas de control social como la política, los medios de comunicación, la tecnología, la ciencia y etc. Su meta artística para revelar cómo los seres humanos son frágiles y delicados en estos ambientes sociales.
