DIONISIO GONZÁLEZ

DIONISIO GONZALEZ

The work of architect and photographer Dionisio González focuses on the chaos caused by both man and nature. Using art as social action, González reveals economic disparities, and ultimately uses the power of architecture for an antidote to the world’s problems. Traveling to far corners of the world, such as Ha Long Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin and Busan in South Korea, González, who was born in the autonomous Spanish province of Gijón, makes hypothetical interventions within communities largely isolated from the developed world, which have been ravaged by natural or economic disaster.
In the series “Dauphin Island” (2011), recently exhibited at Yusto/Giner in Málaga, Spain, González designed space-age forts of iron and concrete to replace the unstable wood buildings that exist in a perpetual status of destruction and rebuilding, due to the island’s geography within the hurricane-dominated Gulf of Mexico. Though González’s designs exist only on paper, his utopian visions offer hope and inspire action.

Architecturally-leaning artist Dionisio González, a senior lecturer at the Universidad de Sevilla, has taken disaster resistance to a pretty weird place in a recent series. Setting his sights on Dauphin Island, Alabama, a small barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico that suffers from devastating hurricanes, González has designed a series of otherworldly homes for the locale that, per the project description, “give shape to new habitable structures in the vacuums in the perception of spaces that had previously been devastated.” Inspired by Neolithic stilt houses, of all things—and from the look of the digital model above, a pile of rolled-up magazines recovered from a flooded basement—his approach is a rather… unconventional one for meeting the needs of a threatened community.
As Gizmodo notes, the claim of disaster resistance, “with no structural testing, no wind-load assessment, and an awful lot of plate glass—should be taken purely as an artist’s statement.” It’s just a hunch, but something tells us that these far out iron-and-concrete future forts won’t be receiving an actual application any time soon.

Mimarlıkla sürrealitenin ilişkisi nasıl kurulabilir? Sürekli etrafımızda gördüğümüz binaların, yani inşa edilebilen mimarlığın ötesini hayal edebilir miyiz? Dionisio Gonzalez İspanya’da gerçekleştirdiği ilk kişisel sergisi “Architecture for Resistance”ta mimarlığı sürrealist fotoğrafik manipülasyonlarla üretiyor.
