Taste of Light

Lukas Franciszkiewicz (takram London) was invited to participate in the Hypervital exhibition curated by Benjamin Loyauté as part of the International Design Biennale Saint Étienne 2015. The general theme of this years Biennale is “The Experiences of Beauty”. Hypervital aims to deconstruct the models of acceptance and opposition and bring together as many minds as possible ready to shape an architecture of new thought to design tomorrow’s world.

For Isaac Newton, it came between his early innovations in pure mathematics and his work on the motion of solid bodies, suggestively falling between the realm of thought and the realm of things. In its radiance and regularity, advancing in straight lines to destroy darkness and reveal the world as it really was, it was an irresistible metaphor for reason itself: hence ‘enlightenment’. Inspired by the phenomenon of “sun gazing”, a practice that includes the ability to survive without food, this project explores the possibility of extending the human capability to directly process energy from natural sunlight for nourishment. In our ongoing search for a ‘clean’ energy source we exploited several resources, each implying different values and aesthetics. Rather than confirming the current trend of regenerative energies and limit our focus on making these resources accessible, “Taste of Light” tries to propose an alternative approach to energy to speculate upon. As eating in general is not only a vital need but also has sensorial and social aspects, this project investigates the aesthetic potential of ‘eating light’ as well as the impact of accommodating our habits. How could we simulate the sensation of taste if eating were no longer necessary?

takram Londonのメンバー・Lukas Franciszkiewiczが、サンテティエンヌ国際デザインビエンナーレ（フランス）にて、Benjamin Loyautéがキュレーターを務める「Hypervital」展に参加しています。2015年のビエンナーレのテーマは「The Experiences of Beauty」。その中で「Hypervital」展は、現在受容されているモデルから脱し、デザインの未来を構築してゆくであろうアイデアを数多く集めた展示です。

“光は現代物理における花形のひとつである。アイザック・ニュートンにとって光とは、彼の活動初期における純粋な数学に関するイノベーションと、固体の動きに関する研究との間に位置するものであり、つまり光が思考と物体両方の領域にまたがる存在であることを示唆している。輝きと秩序によって暗闇を進み貫き、世界の真の姿を照らしだすその様は、当然のごとくそれ自体を「理由」のメタファーとし、ゆえに「Enlightenment（啓蒙）」という言葉がある。現代においても、我々がものを理解するときの言語は光のイメージによって構成されている：ある意味は「明瞭」であり、あるプロセスは「透明」であり、またあるアイデアは「発明的」である。光と理解は切り離せないもののようだ。我々の光それ自体への理解は完璧から程遠いにしても。…”

このプロジェクトは、食物なしに活力を得ようとする行為をインスピレーションとし、日光から直接栄養を得られるように人体の機能が拡張される可能性を探るものである。クリーンエネルギー探求の過程で人間はいくつかの資源の活用を試みてきたが、そのアプローチのそれぞれが独自の価値観や美意識を生み出すことにつながっている。この「Taste of Light」という作品は、昨今の再生可能エネルギーのトレンドに沿って資源を利用可能にすることではなく、「エネルギー」をスペキュレーションのための舞台として捉えるアプローチを提案している。
食べるという行為には、生命活動としての必要性以外に、感覚的・社会的な側面が存在している。このプロジェクトは、そのような視点から「光を食べる」という行為が有し得る美の感覚や、その行為が慣習化した際の影響などを探るのである。
そしてこの作品は、食べるという行為がもはや不要となった未来に、味覚が持つ意味を我々に問いかけているのだ。
