Michael Beitz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from Alfred University and an Master of Fine Arts from the University at Buffalo. He has also worked as a fine woodworker with world-renowned furniture artist Wendell Castle, and NYC furniture design firm BDDW. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. Awarded artist grants and residencies include Sculpture Space in Utica, NY, the Roswell Artist in Residence Program in New Mexico, the Morris Arts Fellowship at the University at Buffalo, and most recently the Bemis Artist Residency in Omaha, Nebraska.

As I look through Michael Beitz’s stunning surreal sculptures, I can’t help but think of a magic spell gone awry. From walls that actually have ears to warped tables and mangled trees, each piece looks like a failed spell attempt at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Based in New York City, Michael Beitz has a wild imagination and a talent to back it up. By pushing the limits of traditional sculptures, his work really does belong in the modern world where shock and awe is prided over almost anything and everything else.

He also alters forms of nature and furniture. Beitz is staying in John Michael Kohler Art Center Residency. He is set to join with artist Larry Bob Phillips for a project in New York this July. У многих людей искусства богатое воображение и они готовы на многое, чтобы создать шедевр и стать известными – кто-то творит немыслимых размеров шляпки, кто-то ради создания картины, готов отрезать ухо, а кто-то способен и на большее сумасшествие. А американский скульптор Майкл Бейтз (Michael Beitz) создает необычные арт-проекты. Идеи для своих проектов он черпает из повседневной жизни, превращая обычные предметы в нечто новое. После таких трансформаций, предметы выглядят абсурдно, но этим то, и привлекают к себе внимание. Начинаешь спрашивать себя: его работы уникальные или сумасшедшие? Думаю, каждый решит для себя сам. Для меня уникальные, ведь, каждый арт-проект можно объяснить. К примеру, обычный стол, который мы видим каждый день, но у Майкла Бейтза он по середине вздымается вверх. Такой арт-проект можно легко объяснить — семья может сидеть за одним столом, но если они в ссоре, то между ними вырастает стена, этот стол и символизирует барьер.
Также скульптору присуще прекрасное чувство юмора, которое он старается, умело объединить с философией. Это заметно по одной из его работ, которую он создал согласно изречению Лопе де Веги «И у стен есть уши». Майкл просто слепил из стены ухо.
С одной стороны, кажется, что просто придумать такие вот идеи, да и воплотить их. А донести до людей идею так, чтобы они прониклись, весьма не легко, особенно, в наше время, когда уже никого ничем не удивишь. Майкл Бейтз продолжает творить и удивлять. А свои работы, на всеобщее обозрения он выставляет на своем личном сайте.
