Significant recent projects by Toyo Ito include the Sendai Médiathèque, Sendai, Japan (2001), where Ito used a unique structure to compose fluid spaces with hardly any walls. The project has had an impact on young architects worldwide. Designing two temporary pavilions, the Brugge Pavilion (2002) in Belgium and the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2002) in London, Ito met the challenge to unify surface and structure.

In going beyond the purity of modernism, Toyo Ito is trying to find an architecture which reflects nature, emerging from autopoietic processes and organic geometries, to create joyful and pleasant spaces filled with life.

Toyo Ito has been an inspiration for generations of architects worldwide since his work started to receive international acclaim in the 1970s. For thirty years he has been a leading figure in architecture and I am delighted that he has accepted the Royal Gold Medal

Toyo Ito’s current work includes public and private projects throughout the world, including the Hôpital Cognacq-Jay in Paris, Relaxation Park in Torrevieja, Extension at the Fira de Barcelona, Montjuic-2 in Barcelona, and VivoCity in Singapore.

Toyo Ito is an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was awarded the 2000 The Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000. In 2002, he received the World Architecture Award 2002 for the Best Building in Asia (Sendai Médiathèque) and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the international jury of the 8th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. In 2003, he received an honorary diploma of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London.

Toyo Ito was born in 1941 in what is now Seoul, South Korea. After leaving the Department of Architecture at Tokyo University in 1965, Ito joined the practice of Kiyonori Kikutake, a well-known architect who was a founding member of the Metabolist school. Metabolism was a movement that grew up in post-war Japan, and was characterised by architects who believed that a future urban society required architecture that was inherently flexible and extensible, capable of ‘organic’ growth. Although the ideas of modular buildings that can ‘grow’ does not feature greatly in Ito’s work, the future-looking architects obviously inspired Ito to develop his own ideas of architecture suitable for the digital age.

He left Kikutake’s studio in 1969, and in 1971 he formed his own, originally called ‘Urban Robot’ (this changed to ’Toyo Ito & Associates’ in 1979). His first building (a house in Kanagawa, Japan) was an unusual-shaped wooden construction, almost completely covered in aluminium panels. Whilst this was not particularly indicative of his later work, it showed the beginnings of his thoughts about ‘skins’ of a building, as well as about housing and other buildings for a modern age. The ideas were developed into his design for the PMT Building (Nagoya, 1978), which features a sinuous but fairly blank aluminium façade.

However, as his career progressed, the concepts of transparency and lightness began to be more important to him – the sheets of aluminium cladding became perforated, allowing his buildings at night to become ‘beacons’ to the surrounding area. This can be seen in his Tower of Winds (Yokahama 1986) and Okawabata River City 21 Town Gate, the so-called Egg of Winds (Tokyo 1991). In Ito’s eyes, the perforated skin of the tower acts as a `filter` that captures all the data from the air, and displays it in a form that we can sense – images are projected onto the skin and onto internal screens, which change with wind movements, temperature etc. In this way, Ito is attempting to create a harmony of nature and building. This idea was developed into his design for the Egg of Winds, which is more sculpture than architecture – during the day it floats as an alien grey blob between bland high-rise buildings, but at night video images flicker inside, which talk of the ephemeral nature of information today. These experiments led directly to his design for the Sendai Mediatheque, itself a ‘gatherer’ of information.

His housing projects have also greatly changed through his career, although the vein of continuity is the material used, namely aluminium – used prolifically in both his first house in Kanagawa, and his more recent ‘Aluminium House’ in Sakurajosui.

Ito continues to design buildings today – recent projects include ‘VivoCity’, a large shopping mall in Singapore, and the Library of Tama Art University, built in 2006 and 2007 respectively. He is also known in Japan for inspiring a younger generation of architects, such as Klein Dytham, Katsuya Fukushima and perhaps most notably Kazuyo Sejima, who with Ryue Nishizawa went on to found SANAA. Parallels can be drawn between the work of Ito and SANAA, for example their Dior Store in Tokyo develops themes of façade and thin floor plates in a very similar way to Ito’s Sendai Mediatheque. Whilst still at the design stage, his proposals for Taichung Opera House show a move towards more fluid, flowing structure, and suggest a link back to the Metabolist movement that he studied under.
