CRISPR the pattern of life – Spain

Bromo’s proposal goes beyond an audiovisual concert of experimental music and generative art. Through the constant search for new communication tools, this conceptual facet, in which research processes become almost academic approaches, helps create transformative experiences, foster an active audience, and generate reflection in the viewer. CRISPR the pattern of life is their latest offering.

DEV HARLAN

Parmenides I

The work continues to build on a visual language rooted in ideal geometries, and a prismatic interplay of light and pattern. The cascading faceted surface carries an implied motion, rolling away from the spectator with meditative ease. This energy potential is given breath by luminescent washes which crash, ebb and flow with internal symmetry.

While best understood directly and perceptually, Dev’s work presents an infinitely reproducible formal structure and lucid logic that can be known universally without empirical knowledge. Light and projection become representative of perceptual knowledge by directly invoking temporal optical phenomenon, but a pure idealized form remains intact. It is this interplay that reproduces the sublime conflict in the viewer, who must choose to ride this crest uncertainly and find exhilaration in the balance.

Chimes
Chimes is an interactive, audio-reactive experience that translates the sound of a room into digital wind, setting in motion an exploration of space, music and time. The installation invites the viewer to surrender to the interplay of spatial sound, touch, air, movement and noise and to discover ever new facets in a constantly changing environment.

Ayoung Kim

In Search of Petra Genetrix

Petra Genetrix, the protagonist of the series Porosity Valley, is a migrant, mineral, and data cluster. In this lecture performance, the artist traces the origin of Petra Genetrix who constantly crosses borders, gender boundaries, and the concept of existence and nonexistence and creates her own hyperbolic mythology. While utilizing audio and video excerpts from her existing works, Ayoung Kim uses her own voice to create a verbal narrative exploring those agents who cross boundaries. By doing so, she continues to trace multifaceted crystal faces of Petra Genetrix, who is fundamentally porous and ambiguous.

FACET

Patricia Olynyk

Oculus
Oculus is a large-scale, collaborative light sculpture that depicts a colossal abstracted drosophila eye, replete with compound faceted surfaces. It both recalls the circular opening at the apex of a cupola and alludes to a surveillance device or drone hovering in mid-air. Oculus is inspired in part by a series of scanning electron micrographs produced in a transgenic lab while researching human and non-human sensoria. The work evokes affective encounters with scale such as viewing miniature particles through the lens of a microscope or wandering through monumental physical environments. As each viewer’s reflection plays across the sculpture’s undulating surface, the apprehension of the self affects both individual and collective behavior in unexpected ways. This affective dynamic plays on the precariousness of our coexistence with other lifeforms in the world, one that is always contingent upon viewers’ bodies and the variability of the environment around them. The act of gazing at Oculus also puts into play the reciprocal condition of both seeing and being seen.

James Whitaker

Joshua Tree Residence

Whitaker has envisioned an “exoskeleton” made of shipping containers painted bright white. The containers appear like a starburst, with cuboid forms pushing out in all directions. The home is intended to offer a connection to the sun-baked landscape, while concurrently providing a sense of protection and privacy. Square windows frame views of the blue sky and rugged terrain. In some areas, faceted ceilings give the effect of being inside a crystalline form.

Solar Egg
The egg is made out of stainless golden mirror sheeting, its multifaceted form breaking up the surroundings that it reflects into a multiplicity of different mirror images. Landscape, mine, town, sky, sun and snow are here combined into a fragmented image that can evoke associations with the complexity spanned by today’s discussion about climate and sustainable community development.more…

Cosmic Surgery
Originally from Germany, Alma Haser is currently based in London, UK. She received her photographic degree from Nottingham Trent University in 2010[…] Her most recent series titled, Cosmic Surgery, combines the tangible photograph and the subject with the photograph itself. This facet of the images creates distinctive stages. Alma as the viewer of the subject, the origami construction, and then the reconstruction is then photographed thus creating a new aspect of the subject’s identity.

Irina Shaposnikova

Crystallographica
The futuristic curves highlighted the collection’s minimalistic inspiration. The unusual creations brought to mind robotic-like fixtures, while exuding elegance and grace. We fell instantly in love with the cold yet fascinating faceted dresses.

JOSÉ LEÓN CERRILLO

Doble agente
The Mexican artist José León Cerrillo, born in 1976 in San Luís Potosí, uses his multifaceted oeuvre to question what exactly makes a painted picture a work of art. Cerrillo examines the discursive function and the “social character” of painting by provocatively paring a picture down to a decorative pattern or by experimenting with the many different ways of presenting a picture.

EVGENY KAZANTSEV

finalizes mixed-use sonnenhof complex

J Mayer H Architects has completed a housing and office complex in Germany, covered with graphic patterns that extend down from facades to create the impression of elongated shadows. The four buildings that make up the Sonnenhof complex range in height from five to seven storeys, and are clustered around a central courtyard. All four buildings feature faceted monochrome facades. Skewed pentagonal and square windows are outlined by grey aluminium panelling, contrasting the stark white plasterwork. In homage to this detailing, J Mayer H chose to paint different areas of the courtyard black and white, creating the illusion that dark shadows are cast onto the ground.Wedge-shaped planters with integrated benches contribute to this effect. The Sonnenhof complex is located in Jena, a town in the Saale river valley in eastern Germany.

RADIAL AND BLAUS

MID AND PLAYMODES
radial and blaus
‘radial’ and ‘blaus’ are two interactive lighting installations, both a result of the collaboration between catalonia-based digital research collectives MID (media interactive design) and playmodes. ‘blaus’ introduces the abstract realm of three dimensional geometry through the mediums of audio and illumination – this could manifest as a cube or a blossoming flower, a grid or a jellyfish, a mutant framework of reflecting lights which submerge the audience into a multi-faceted universe, driven by hidden forces of the architecture. ‘blaus’ is an immersive space where audio-visual elements relate
intimately to impact on the visitor. the process led the designers to build most of the software and hardware elements themselves, by means of algorithm design, digital fabrication techniques and craft handwork. on the hardware side, the use of open source technologies, such as arduino, allowed us to create a flexible electronic system easily addressable by opensound – control data. ‘duration open source software by
james george was used in order to independently control, compose, and play a full score for the laser diodes, servomotors, lights and music.on the sound design side, all music and sound effects are made through the use of audio programming environments such as predate and reactor.
custom digital instruments are made in order to exactly match the resonant frequency of the space and its harmonics.

STEFAN BENCHOAM

Ejercicio de Dibujo

His work as an artist is multifaceted, with at least two distinctive lines of research: one which is developed in the public realm through actions and interventions, and another one which uses informality to question the myths of authenticity, of the artist, and of art itself, which he hopes will help blur the lines of work of both the artist and the curator.
