In the rush to consume the future, we have forgotten that memory was never meant to be efficient. It was meant to be ours. 

This film traces a thirty-year migration from the heavy matter of the 90s to the hallucinations of the latent space. 

As architecture melts into data-streams, a ghostly narrator asks: What happens to the human story when the machine begins to dream in our place?”

BIO

Pedro Bayeux is an audiovisual project director and journalist (PUC-SP) with over 20 years of experience focused on documentaries, sustainability, and innovation. He has directed numerous projects on the music scene and created Latin America’s first documentary on e-sports, as well as films covering indigenous communities, fashion, art, technology, and culture.

A Walled City – China / United States

A Walled City is an interactive AI installation that transforms personal and collective visual memories into a decentralized city. Grounded in the spatial logic, zoning, and aesthetics of the historical Kowloon Walled City (Hongkong), a self-built hyper-dense enclave that grew in a legal and political void from the 1950s to 1993, the work builds a multi-agent AI system to turn participant-uploaded images into architectural chambers, forming a living structure where data, memory and history converge.

Weidi Zhang is a new media artist and designer based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. She is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Immersive Experience Design at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center at Arizona State University.

ReCollection is an interactive installation that uses artificial intelligence to construct synthetic collective visual memories from natural language input. The work blurs the line between memory and imagination through experimental visualizations and AI systems, prompting reflection on how narratives of memory are shaped by emerging technologies.

BIO

Weidi Zhang is a new media artist and designer based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. She is an Assistant Professor of Immersive Experience Design at Arizona State University. Her interdisciplinary research explores speculative assemblages at the intersection of immersive media, experimental data visualization, and interactive AI art. Dr. Jieliang (Rodger) Luo is the CEO and Head of Research at Minus AI, a research-driven startup focused on leveraging AI technology to empower the creative industry. He holds a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has previously served as a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Autodesk AI Lab.

The term “Zersetzung” [decomposition] identifies the psychological repression employed by the Stasi in the DDR that attacked their victims’ self-perception, confidence, and capacity for resistance through deliberate alienation and paranoia. Victims found themselves isolated, doubting their own memories and relationships, as the secret police manipulated their social environment to create chronic uncertainty about what is real, true, authentic; precisely the same instabilities created by AI.

Michael Betancourt is a distinguished Cuban-American (Latinx) critical theorist, moviemaker, and research artist known for his work in the fields of digital capitalism, motion graphics, and Glitch Art; a pioneer of Glitch Art, he has made visually seductive digital art since 1990 that brings the visionary tradition into the present by glitching still and moving images.

OMA NONNA is an experimental short film created with artificial intelligence that guides the viewer through a landscape of memory linked to the colonization of southern Brazil. Among the memories of European immigrants from the late 19th century and the interwar period, narratives of loss, displacement, and resilience emerge, marked by the reconstruction of life in a foreign land and the occupation of indigenous territories.

Herinarivo Rakotomanana’s practice unfolds between introspective fiction films and music videos rooted in the urban and Afro scenes, mostly with independent artists from Paris and Congo. Since the early days of GANs, the artist has been exploring the latent space of AI-generated imagery, weaving sensorial cinema and visual experimentation, from photorealistic film to animation.

Arrels #64 – Spain

Arrels has a strong relationship to the Spanish landscape, connecting drawing, code, and repetitive loops to the environment through a cycle of growth and decay.

With nature as its inspiration, it becomes a carefully choreographed generative animation. In Arrels, growing roots in the colors of earth and sky collide in a vibrant dance. New growth in the arid soil overtakes the old, and the cycle continues.

Anna Carreras is a generative artist focusing her work on the use of algorithms to create visuals that depict generic concepts, foster memories, and evoke new discussions.

Working from scratch, she codes “dumb” minimal procedural systems that explore the intrinsic characteristics of the medium, showing how simple rules can produce complex, unexpected, beautiful results that question our understanding of technology, life, and relationships.

Afterlives-Chimeras: Wetland Carbonized Memories – Brazil

Afterlives-Chimeras: Wetland Carbonized Memories reimagines ancient Egyptian animal mummification through the lens of ecological tragedy. Inspired by Brazilian swamps and the destruction of wildlife caused by agribusiness, mining, and the steel industry, the project uses AI (Krea.AI and Meshy.AI) to create hybrid creatures from images of charred animals. The chimeras, 3D printed with PLA, reminiscent of mummified linen, symbolize loss, transformation, and the urgency of ecological balance.

Clarissa Ribeiro is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at USP and former Director of Roy Ascott’s Technoetic Arts Studio in Shanghai. A PhD holder with a Fulbright postdoctoral degree, she intersects art, science, and technology in morphogenetic practices, adopting animism as a way to navigate ecologies as cosmologies.

Quantum Memories: Nature Studies
Technological and digital advancements of the past century could as well be defined by the humanity’s eagerness to make machines go to places that humans could not go, including the spaces inside our minds and the non-spaces of our un- or sub-conscious acts. These unique pieces of the “Quantum Memories” series exhibit arresting visuals and colors that speculate the probability of reaching invisible spaces. They are composed in collaboration with a generative algorithm enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing, a new form of computing that exploits the unusual physics of the subatomic world. It turns the visual data that flows around us into an artwork that represents our collective and digitized memories of nature and encourages the viewer to imagine the potential of this computing technology for the future of art, design, and architecture.

Quantum Memories is Refik Anadol Studio’s epic scale investigation of the intersection between Google AI Quantum Supremacy experiments, machine learning, and aesthetics of probability. Technological and digital advancements of the past century could as well be defined by the humanity’s eagerness to make machines go to places that humans could not go, including the spaces inside our minds and the non-spaces of our un- or sub-conscious acts. Quantum Memories utilizes the most cutting-edge, Google AI’s publicly available quantum computation research data and algorithms to explore the possibility of a parallel world by processing approximately 200 million nature and landscape images through artificial intelligence. These algorithms allow us to speculate alternative modalities inside the most sophisticated computer available, and create new quantum noise-generated datasets as building blocks of these modalities. The 3D visual piece is accompanied by an audio experience that is also based on quantum noise–generated data, offering an immersive experience that further challenges the notion of mutual exclusivity. The project is both inspired by and a speculation of the Many-Worlds Interpretation in quantum physics – a theory that holds that there are many parallel worlds that exist at the same space and time as our own.

Can we design future memories for the body?
Is the body itself the apparatus for remembering cultural processes?Prospectus For a Future Body proposes new perspectives on how the body remembers and invents technological narratives. Central to the project is the study of body movement in dance: How it can evolve, adapt or re-condition to possible futures?Eternal Summer Storm explores the concept of muscle memory transfer as an alternative form of interactive cultural continuities. This concept prototype speculates on a future digital library of body movements or dance techniques that can be experienced beyond the audio-visual conventions. Eternal Summer Storm attempts to recreate legendary Japanese dancer Tatsumi Hijikata’s Butoh dance choreography and experience in ‘A Summer Storm’ (1973) from archival footages.Bionic Movement Research is a collection of experiments on the process of designing digital muscle memory for the body. Inspired by Luigi Galvani discovery (1780) of animal electricity in the human body, these experiments appropriate the techniques of electrical nerve stimulation to choreograph artificial muscle contraction and body movement.

Machine Hallucination
Refik Anadol’s most recent synesthetic reality experiments deeply engage with these centuries-old questions and attempt at revealing new connections between visual narrative, archival instinct and collective consciousness. The project focuses on latent cinematic experiences derived from representations of urban memories as they are re-imagined by machine intelligence. For Artechouse’s New York location, Anadol presents a data universe of New York City in 1025 latent dimensions that he creates by deploying machine learning algorithms on over 100 million photographic memories of New York City found publicly in social networks. Machine Hallucination thus generates a novel form of synesthetic storytelling through its multilayered manipulation of a vast visual archive beyond the conventional limits of the camera and the existing cinematographic techniques. The resulting artwork is a 30-minute experimental cinema, presented in 16K resolution, that visualizes the story of New York through the city’s collective memories that constitute its deeply-hidden consciousness.

“In these images I apply the notion or phenomenon of „ lack of time”. When I started to develop the ‘Failed memories’ series, my intention was to examine and involve the notion of time as a factor into my images. To put it more simple, to visualise the factor and importance of time in the mechanisms of the memory, as without time there is no memory.”

In Los Angeles he made a series of drawings based on a mix of old glamour images from the film industry and geometric, machine patterns. Los Angeles inspires Bas through the great social contrasts, the visual culture and, in particular, the dominant influence of the film industry. He experiences moving through the city as a journey through time. In this place, history seems distorted and memories erased.
