Basque artist Javier Pérez’s The Night Journey, a glass pillow, doesn’t begin to represent all of his various works, but you can see more at the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Here’s his self-portrait. (This Carrion, which was in the 2011 show, I think is more representative of his work.)Carroña The spectator walks alongside blood-red splinters of glass that are spread over the floor and reaches a broken chandelier. On top of it black ravens, vulture-like, seem to disembowel it. This scenery awakens in us the idea of glamour and wealth coming to an end, like a motionless animal turns into something dead.

Javier Pérez was born in Bilbao in 1968. He lives and works in Barcelona. His work is permeated by a strong symbolism and accompanied by an intense use of metaphor.The artist’s favorite subjects for addressing the impermanence and cyclic nature of life are the body and time. Works such as Mutaciones (2004), a mixed media installation exhibited at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, or Tempus fugit (2002) emphasize the inexorable passage of time and the inevitable traces that it leaves on the body from a biological but, above all, from an existential point of view. To create his art, Pérez uses strong, often antithetical means of communication like horse hair and polyester, silkworm cocoons and ceramics, or cattle intestines and blown glass.
In 2001 he was invited to represent Spain at the Venice Biennale. In 2008 the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao exhibited Pérez’s 1997 work, Màscara de seducciòn and bought it for its own collection. He has had other exhibitions at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg (1997), the Museo Nacional Centro Reina Sofia in Madrid (2004), and the Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporaneo in Vitoria (2006). Some of the artist’s works are in the collections of Marseille’s CIRVA, the Fondation Guerlain, and Strasbourg’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as the Basque Parliament.

After studying Fine Arts at The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (ENSBA), city where he settles between 1992-1997, Javier Pérez breaks into the international arts scene with his first individual exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris in 1996 and a year later with his first museum exhibition at Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg.

His works are characterized by a certain syncretism, both in the method and materials used. Sculpture, photography, drawing, video and performance are used independently as well as together to create installations where interaction and exploration are essential.

With his work, Javier Pérez reveals his inquiries and reflections on mankind, using a language full of intense metaphor and imbued with a strong symbolism. His works contain an intrinsic dialectic, showing how weak can be the boundary between concepts seemingly opposite such as the natural and the cultural, the inside and the outside or life and death.
