What is Machine Project?

1) Machine Project is a storefront space in the echo park neighborhood of Los Angeles that hosts events about all kinds of things we find interesting – scientific talks, poetry readings, musical performances, competitions, group naps, cheese tastings and so forth. We usually do about two events a week, open to the general public and free of charge. Usually at 8pm. Information on upcoming events can be found on our future page.

2) Machine Project is an informal educational institution located in the the same storefront space as mentioned above. We teach all kinds of things we find interesting – electronics, sewing, pickling, computer programming, car theft and so forth. We usually have one or two class going a week, open to the public for a fee by pre-registration. Information on upcoming classes can be found on our classes page.

3) Machine Project is a loose group of artist/performer collaborators, who do projects together when invited by other people and institutions, usually museums. Information on special projects can be found on our projects page.

4) A huge gracias to our generous donors!

Machine Project is a 501c3 non-profit corporation.

If you’re nerd or an art-lover (or preferably, both) and you live in L.A., you need no introduction to Machine Project. But if you still have a Machine-shaped hole in your soul, allow me to rattle off some disjointed phrases that might give you a fragmented picture of what this magical place is: pneumatic tubes, jam-making jamborees, houseplant vacations, welding workshops, poetry readings, hyperbolic crochet classes, paleolithic survivalism, circuit-bending, video art and fungi.

This incomparable gallery/performance space/community center, which moved into a humble Echo Park storefront just five years ago, has rapidly established itself as a cultural force to be reckoned with. They’re frequently invited to breathe new life into long-established institutions like LACMA and the Hammer Museum– with the assistance of speed-metal guitarists, glass harmonicas and ping pong tables. If their latest installation is any indication, they won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Artist Josh Beckman’s Sea Nymph is a life-size shipwreck (replete with secret treasure buried within) that’s suddenly sunk into the floor of the cramped gallery, like some kind of horrific Unified Field Theory experiment gone awry. This stunning display of craftsmanship a sight to behold, and all this month, Machine’s hosting a series of great nautical events within the wreckage. Like a handy lecture about how not to get lost at sea that I attended last week, a Moby Dick puppet show, and a bevy of musicians singing lovesick oceanic odes. Don’t miss it! Even shipwrecks don’t last forever.
