Sebastian Schramm’s work explores the photographic sculpture and the tension between momentary intervention and considered design cues. As a commercial designer Schramm describes the tension of professional communication design and free photographic work as motivating and productive at the same time.

Communications design requires you to develop aesthetic solutions, which follow clear guidelines: a corporate design or a particular brand strategy for example. The client outlines the requirements and we comply. This “professional aesthetic” determines the everyday; this alone is reason enough not to underestimate its impact and importance. My own work gives me a greater freedom. It allows me to express issues that concern me personally. This is crucial, especially since it concerns others.

Today there is an increasing sense of alienation – despite (or perhaps because of) our 500 facebook friends. My photos are an attempt to present motives and behavior of individuals at a single glance. I have always been intrigued by the spontaneity of the photographic moment and the durational relationship to the spur of the moment set up. By concerning and centering on individuals the photographic image offers an insight into a person or an item that is characteristic of them. The results offer something very individual or surprising, which otherwise would not have become apparent.

Sebastian Schramm is also founder of Schramm Kommunikationsdesign agency in Frankfurt, Germany that specialises in commercial design and photography for industrial companies and cultural institutions.
