Ruhrlights- Twilight Zone Duisburg

The light art festival RUHRLIGHTS: Twilight Zone was part of the RUHR.2010 – European Capital of Culture 2010, and was shown in 4 cities.

I was invited to do the opening performances in Muelheim/Ruhr at the Ringlokschuppen, where I showed my project the concept of … (here and now), and in Duisburg at the ‘Garten der Erinnerung’.

For Duisburg I combined parts of 3 different projects:
1. doors of perception
2. social patterns
3. the concept of … (here and now)

DOPE is challenging the perception of architecture and space by projecting mainly white rectangles.
social patterns mixes short loops of daily life scenes and news flashes. The dark texture of each scene already contains the seed of information of the upcoming next, in this case it is: a refugee with her child, people celebrating on the street, a man shooting, marching troops…

Since more than two decades media-artist, director/choreographer and composer Klaus Obermaier creates innovative works in the field of performing arts, music, theatre and new media, highly acclaimed by critics and audience.
His performances are shown at major festivals and theaters throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America and Australia.
He worked with dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater, Chris Haring, Robert Tannion (DV8), Desireé Kongerød (S.O.A.P. Dance Theatre Frankfurt), …
He composed for ensembles like Kronos Quartet, German Chamber Philharmonics, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Balanescu Quartet, among others.

Since 2006 he is visiting professor at the University IUAV of Venice teaching ‘directing and new media’.
Also since 2006 he is member of the jury of the international choreography competition ‘no ballet’ in Ludwigshafen/Rhein, Germany.
Since 2010 he holds courses for choreography and interactive media at the Accademia Nazionale di Danza di Roma and at the University IUAV of Venice.
In 2005 and 2008 he taught as an adjunct professor for composition at the Webster University Vienna.
He gives lectures at international universities and institutions.

Ruhrlights: Twilight Zone, the international festival of light art, will show the particular landscapes of the Ruhr in a new light. In a partnership of the cities of Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Hattingen, Bochum, Witten, Hagen and Dortmund, the Ruhr will be shown as a very special recreation and natural preservation area through light art productions in September 2010.
Internationally renowned light artists like Peter Kogler, Yves Netzhammer, Siegrun Appelt, Tatzu Nishi, Klaus Obermaier, Andreas M. Kaufmann and others have been invited to highlight the special qualities of the Ruhr’s unique landscapes.

The artists will create works at selected locations along the Ruhr that enable new sensory impressions and change visitors’ emotional experiences. The light art will direct the viewers’ eye to specific places and tell stories that are very different from everyday life experiences.

Das internationale Lichtkunstfestival “Ruhrlights: Twilight Zone” gibt den besonderen Landschaftsqualitäten an der Ruhr eine neue Sichtbarkeit. In einer programmatischen Partnerschaft der Städte Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Hattingen, Bochum, Witten, Hagen und Dortmund wird die Ruhr im September 2010 mit Lichtinszenierungen als besonderer Natur- und Naherholungsraum in Szene gesetzt.

International renommierte Lichtkünstlerinnen und Lichtkünstler, wie Peter Kogler, Yves Netzhammer, Siegrun Appelt, Tatzu Nishi, Klaus Obermaier, Andreas M. Kaufmann u.a. sind eingeladen, den Qualitäten dieser besonderen Landschaftszone Ausdruck zu verleihen.

An ausgewählten Orten entlang der Ruhr schaffen die Künstler Werke, die neue Sinneseindrücke ermöglichen und die emotionale Erfahrung der Besucher verändern. Die Lichtkunst lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf ganz bestimmte Orte, setzt sie in Bewegung und erzählt eine andere Geschichte als die des Alltäglichen.
