Levi van Veluw’s series “Origin of the Beginning consists of photographs, installations and videos in which he draws from his own childhood memories to thematically and narratively develop his own brand of self-portraiture.

Portrayed in this piece is a room with 5 persons sitting at a table. These persons are Levi van Veluw, his father, mother, brother and sister. The room is executed as a life-size installation (4m x 2.5m x 2.5m) in which everything , including the family members themselves, is covered with 20.000 dark brown wooden blocks. (without any digital manipulation)

At first glance everyone is sitting peacefully at the table, the picture of a perfect family unit. Yet this group of figures is positioned in an abstract environment, unrecognisable and therefore far removed from reality. Dimly light and dark in colour the overriding tone of this work is claustrophobic and sombre, exuding a sense of loneliness.

The awkward silence and dark colour suggest uncomfortable underlying tensions and emotions. The endless repetition of wooden blocks stands for van Veluw’s attempts to gain control of his own position within the familial structure.

Nesta peça é um quarto com 5 pessoas sentadas a uma mesa. Essas pessoas são Levi van Veluw, seu pai, mãe, irmão e irmã. A sala é executada com uma instalação em tamanho real (4m x 2.5mx 2.5m), em que tudo, incluindo os próprios familiares, é coberto com 20.000 blocos de madeira marrom escuro. Levi van Veluw nació en 1985 en la ciudad de Hoevelaken,
es un artista multidisciplinar, que vive y trabaja en Holanda.

‘Familia’ es la edición más reciente de la serie ‘Origen del Comienzo’ del artista holandés levi van veluw – compuesta por fotografías, elementos de video y tridimensionales. En este segmento particular, van veluw representa cinco personas – su padre, madre, hermano, hermana y él mismo -en una mesa de comedor que se ejecuta en una instalación a gran escala (4 m x 2.5 x 2.5 m) que ha sido construida enteramente de 20, 000 piezas de madera marrón oscuros, la repetición de estos elementos permanente es una expresión de su intento por hacerse con el control en la estructura familiar. En primer lugar, cada uno de los parientes de van veluw representados parecen estar sentados tranquilamente en la mesa, sin embargo, su interpretación de las figuras dentro del medio ambiente abstracto e indefinido de alguna manera quiere extraerlas de cualquier tipo de realidad. El ajuste tenue y tonos oscuros de la madera forman parte de la exploración del artista en el aislamiento y la soledad que vivió como un niño. el cuerpo de trabajo tiene un tono fundamental de oscuridad y soledad, en qué van veluw extrae sus propios recuerdos temáticamente y la forma narrativa de desarrollar su propia marca de auto-retrato.

De fotoseries van Levi van Veluw zijn allemaal zelfportretten, getekend en gefotografeerd door de kunstenaar zelf: een solistisch proces. Zijn werken manifesteren zich als elementaire overdrachten waarbij hij het gezicht modificeert tot een object. Gecombineerd met andere stilistische elementen creëert hij een derde object met een zeer groot visueel effect. Het werk wat je ziet is daarom geen portret, maar een informatief beeld van kleur, vorm, textuur en inhoud. Het beeld bevat de geschiedenis van een kort creatief proces, waarbij de kunstenaar beweegt tussen de entiteit van subject en object.

Sinds zijn afstuderen aan de heeft Levi van Veluw in korte tijd al een opmerkelijk aantal successen geboekt. Zijn werk is al op meerdere locaties binnen Europa, Verenigde Staten en Azie getoond, waardoor hij al een aantal prestigieuze prijzen heeft gewonnen, waaronder de Photographer of the Year Award bij de IPA International Photo Awards in de VS en de Akzo Nobel Jong Talent 1e prijs.

“Family/Origin of the Beginning” è l’ultima opera dell’artista olandese Levi van Veluw.
Una installazione ispirata al ricordo della sua famiglia, colta in un istante fuori dallo spazio e dal tempo.
Tutto è ossessivamente ricoperto con più di 20.000 bocchetti di legno (nessuna manipolazione digitale) che rendono in modo quasi tangibile il disagio e le tensioni relazionali fra le persone.

«Семья» – новейшая работа из серии «Происхождение начал» голландского художника Леви Ван Велюв (Levi Van Veluw). Она состоит из фотографий, видео и трехмерных элементов. В этом объекте Ван Велюв изображает пять людей за обеденным столом – своего отца, мать, брата, сестру и себя – в виде крупноразмерной инсталляции (4,5 × 2,5 × 2,5 м), собранной полностью из 20 000 темно-коричневых деревянных блоков. При помощи повторения этих элементов выражается попытка художника достичь контроля внутри семейного устройства.

На первый взгляд, все родственники Ван Велюва изображены мирно сидящими за столом. Однако нахождение внутри вымышленного и неопределенного окружения каким-то образом удаляет их от реальности. Тусклое освещение обстановки и темные тона дерева отображают мироощущение художника через призму замкнутости и одиночества, которые он испытывал в детстве.

От объекта исходит подавляющий тон мрачности и скуки, которые художник черпает из своих воспоминаний, чтобы тематически и обстоятельно развить собственный стиль автопортрета.
