Voor Ulrich Vogl is tekenen geen studie voor een ander kunstwerk, maar een kunstvorm op zich. Hij breidt het begrip uit, door het op glas, spiegel en folie toe te passen. Zo worden zijn tekeningen driedimensionaal, bewegen ze, reflecteren ze en werpen ze schaduwen. Het lijken in eerste instantie misschien geen tekeningen, maar volgens de definitie van Vogl zijn het dat wel. De kenmerken van tekeningen zijn volgens hem directe eenvoud en het onderscheid tussen lijn en oppervlakte.
Licht speelt een belangrijke rol in het werk van Vogl. Het is veelbepalend, maar stelt tegelijkertijd niet veel voor. Vogl vindt het een interessant element om mensen aan te trekken.
De installatie O.T. bestaat uit diaprojectoren, waarvan de dia’s bestaan uit aluminiumfolie met gaatjes. Hierdoor worden er alleen kleine stipjes verlicht op de muur, die samen de illusie van een stadsgezicht in de nacht geven. Bijkomende effecten van de projectoren is dat het licht per projector enigszins verschilt in warmte, net als in een stad. Het is eigenlijk een soort film. Vogl vindt die balans tussen sculptuur en film interessant en zoekt die steeds op in zijn werk. De rij projectoren bestaat uit verschillende soorten, zodat ze bij elkaar al een sculpturaal stadsgezicht vormen.

Born in Kaufbeuren (Germany) 1973. Lives and works in Berlin.
Ulrich Vogl studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich (1996-1999) and at the Universität der Künste in Berlin (MA) (1999-2002). In 2004 Vogl completed his Master of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Since his first solo exhibition in 2006 at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin, Ulrich Vogl has presented his work around Europe with recent solo shows in Germany („peindre d´abord une cage“, Galerie Opdahl, Berlin, 2012), Spain („She brings the rain“ with A. Benchamma, ADN Gallery, Barcelona, 2011), Norway („Nordlicht“, Gallery Opdahl, Stavanger, 2010), Poland („In the light“, Le Guern Gallery, Warsaw, 2010), Italy („Watching the stars“, Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery, Rovereto, 2009).

Latest group exhibitions include „Berlin Status I“ (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2012), „Techno-Ecologies“ (kim?, Riga, 2011), „Märklin World“ (KAdE, Amersfoort, 2011), Halleluwah! Hommage a CAN“ (abtart, Stuttgart, 2011), „ARTIUM Collection“ (Artium, Vitoria, 2010).

His works are to be found in private and public collections.

In 2011 he received the EHF grant of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and in 2010 he was awarded the ZVAB Phoenix Price.

.Artist statement:

The expression “extension of drawing” can be considered the leitmotiv of my artistic practice. While my overall topic would be the “extension of drawing”, the focus of the past years has been on “drawing and light”, working with shadows, reflections, movement and drawing.
Many of this time-based works are playful and some are interactive. The balance between the object and the phenomena that they produce is important. I want to create a magic world – that works like a catalyser to the viewer’s own thoughts- without ever hiding the simplicity of its creation.

Ulrich Vogl are în portofoliu lucrări simple şi curate, pe care le construieşte elegant în jurul unei idei. Un proiect recent este O.T., o instalaţie de lumină realizată cu proiectoare. Vogl a folosit proiectoare de toate mărimile şi mărcile, le-a aliniat şi le-a pus să ruleze nişte slide-uri cu puncte luminoase: alăturarea tuturor formează impresia unui cer nocturn de metropolă văzut de la distanţă.

Nu sunt sigură însă cum funcţionează la scară instalaţiile lui pentru că din câte am observat în alte cazuri, Vogl preferă dimensiunile miniaturale – nu tocmai adecvate pentru pretenţia imersivă. Dar poate că tocmai acesta e farmecul lucrărilor lui: prin redimensionarea la scară mică îi oferă vizitatorului şansa de a se detaşa de obiectul iluziei şi de a contempla precum un spectator străin universuri mărunte – aici, Oraşul.
