Press release 2008 ‘Landscapes’. This 4-piece series reinterprets the traditional landscape painting, removing plots of grass, clusters of trees, babbling brooks from their intimate 2 dimensional formats and transposing them onto the 3 dimensional contours of his own face. Thus a fresh twist is given to the obsession inherent in the romantic landscape of recreating the world and simultaneously being part of it. The romantic landscape and self-portrait genres are combined as a means of re-examination.Besides the four landscapes, Levi van Veluw will also present a new video piece, landscape installation and works from two other series of photographs.

Levi van Veluw´s photo series are self-portraits, drawn and photographed by himself: a one-man-process. His works constitute elemental transfers; modifying the face as object; combining it with other stylistic elements to create a third visual object of great visual impact. The work you see therefore is not a portrait, but an information-rich image of colour, form, texture, and content. The image contains the history of a short creative process, with the artist shifting between the entities of subject and object.

Since having graduated from the Artez Art School in Arnhem the Netherlands, Levi van Veluw has enjoyed a remarkable amount of success in a short period of time, with his work being showcased in several different locations across Europe and the States, earning him a number of prestigious awards that include the Photographer of the Year Award at the IPA International Photo Awards in the USA.

Né en 1985 à Hoevelaken aux Pays-Bas, Levi Van Veluw est un artiste multidisciplinaire qui vit et travaille toujours dans son pays d’origine.
Après avoir été diplômé de l’École des beaux-arts Artez à Arnhem aux Pays-Bas, et avoir fait un stage chez le grand Erwin Olaf, il connait un remarquable succès dans un court laps de temps, avec son travail présenté à différents endroits à travers l’Europe et les États-Unis, lui permettant de gagner un certain nombre de prix prestigieux, notamment le photographe de l’année à l’API, prix international de photographie aux États-Unis.

Son travail est basé sur des séries d’autoportraits retouchées et prises par lui même, il modifie par la suite son visage, comme objet, le combinant avec d’autres éléments – souvent en rapport avec la nature – pour obtenir un grand impact visuel.

Levi van Veluw gehört zu den Künstlern, deren Bekanntheitsgrad innerhalb kurzer Zeit durch die Decke schoss. 1985 in Hoevelaken in den Niederlanden geboren, begann er schon 2004 einen neuen thematischen Ansatz für das künstlerische Selbstporträt zu entwerfen. Die Idee von der veränderten Selbstwahrnehmung unterwarf er über die 8 vergangenen Jahre zahlreichen Flexionen und Entwicklungen. Eines blieb jedoch jeder Werkserie gemein: Der Künstler wird darin immer selbst zur Skulptur und Projektionsfläche.

Vor allem im vergangenen Jahr erregte er mit seiner äußerst aufwendigen Installation “Family”, eine Fortführung der Serie “Origin of the Beginning”, die Aufmerksamkeit internationaler Publikationen und Galerien. Die Arbeit zeigt 5 Personen, die in einem namenlosen Raum um einen Tisch versammelt sitzen. Das Besondere daran ist, dass sowohl der Raum, der in seinen Maßen lebensgroßen Verhältnissen entspricht, wie auch die Familienmitglieder mit 20.000 dunkelbraunen Holzblöcken bedeckt sind.

Diese Verlagerung des friedvollen, harmonischen Miteinanders einer Familie in eine abstrakte, unkenntlich gemachte Umgebung ruft jedoch eine seltsame Atmosphäre aus Einsamkeit, Stille und Klaustrophobie.

Auch in vorangegangenen Werkserien dient der Kopf des Künstlers als Kunstobjekt. In “Landscapes” beispielsweise überträgt er das klassisch zweidimensionale Landschaftsporträt auf eine, seiner Kopfform folgenden dreidimensionale Ebene. Außerdem bedient er sich an materiellen Gegenständen wie Steinen oder immateriellen Phänomenen wie Neonlicht, um ein neues visuelles Objekt herzustellen.

Utilizando su propio cuerpo como modelo en la mayoría de sus trabajos, en especial su cabeza. Levi van Veluw crea obras dueñas de una belleza superficial, que adquieren un gran impacto visual partiendo de diferentes efectos y situaciones sobre su rostro, casi siempre inexpresivo y de apariencia universal. Obras sobre las imperfecciones e insatisfacciones humanas, que le permiten al espectador proyectarse en ellas.

Sus proyectos tienen la finalidad de llevar a los objetos que las componen, a situaciones ilógicas y diferentes a las cuales pertenece originalmente, generado así un cambio de percepción con respecto al uso que generalmente se les da a estos materiales. -Juliana Mira

Eis um exemplo de como na arte contemporânea nem tudo está inventado. Veja-se o caso de Levi van Veluw, um jovem artista plástico holandês (nasceu em 1985) que recorre a um material tão simples quanto eficaz para fazer arte: o seu próprio corpo. Claro que não é o primeiro artista a utilizar o corpo como instrumento ou objecto artístico, mas talvez seja deveras original o método criativo utilizado e o resultado visual subsequente.
Levi van Veluw desenvolveu uma série de fotografias a que chamou “Landscapes”, que consiste em auto-retratos nos quais o autor utiliza a sua cabeça (e parte do tronco) como “tela” para as suas próprias criações. Levi van Veluw recorre a ervas, galhos de árvore, madeira, pedras, cabelo e outros materiais do dia-a-dia para conceber, de forma minuciosa, estas esculturas e desenhos sobre o seu próprio corpo. Depois fotografa o resultado, sempre no mesmo ângulo e com a mesma expressão facial, e expõe as respectivas fotografias em galerias de arte de todo o mundo.
“Cada elemento é escolhido conscientemente”, diz o artista. “A minha cabeça é o veículo dessas transformações e combinações, mas o rosto inexpressivo – quase universal – permite ao espectador projectar-se no meu trabalho.” Com esta série de fotografias “Landscapes”, o artista holandês pretende trilhar uma espécie de itinerário de memórias visuais resultantes de imagens da natureza que impressionam o homem. A fusão do humano com a natureza, ou escultura naturais no corpo humano.
A originalidade do trabalho de Levi van Veluw tem despertado muito interesse por parte de galerias de arte de todo o mundo, tendo já ganho vários prémios pelo reconhecimento da sua obra, inclusive o de melhor fotógrafo de Belas Artes de 2007 no International Photo Awards, dos Estados Unidos.

Hollanda Arnhem Artez Sanat Okulundan mezun olan, 1985 doğumlu Levi van Veluw, Avrupa ve Amerika`nın çeşitli yerlerinde yaptığı sergilerle başarısını uluslararası da kanıtlamış oldu. Amerika`daki IPA Uluslararası Fotoğraf Ödülleri tarafından yılın fotoğrafçısı seçilen Veluw, 2009`dan beri Rotterdam Willem de Kooning Akademisi Fotoğraf bölümünde sanat öğretmenliği yapmaktadır.
