Another perspective can of course be found in the “absurd” human enhancement works of LucyandBart (Lucy McRae and Bart Hess) that is often described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body.

Both share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression, creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement.

As a body Architects they invent and build structures on the skin that re-shape the human silhouette. Their provocative, often grotesquely beautiful imagery suggest a new breed; a future human archetype existing in an alternate world. Visualized in scenarios which let the human body perform as an intimate interface with the material world.

“Lucyandbart” is a collaboration between artists Lucy McRae and Bart Hess. In it they imagine human bodies and faces physically altered with a shocking but artistic realism. Globules of foam, asymmetric spines… fascinating and repugnant simultaneously, the pictures become even more disturbing because they don’t hint at the emotional state of the subject. Each transformed human looks blankly back at you, neither horrified or surprised or excited about their change of form, but merely present and allowing it to be shown to you.

STRADDLING THE WORLDS OF FASHION, TECHNOLOGY AND THE BODY. THIS BODY ARCHITECT INVENTS AND BUILDS STRUCTURES AROUND THE BODY THAT RE-SHAPE THE HUMAN SILHOUETTE.

Lucy McRae is an Australian artist, designer and compulsive inquisitor. Over time, she has fused her training as a classical ballerina with an inherent fascination with the body, and forged a unique profession: Body Architect.

McRae, based in Amsterdam, takes the human body as her canvas. Each project inhabits an artistic realm that straddles the worlds of sculpture, architecture, science, and fashion design, manipulating the body’s natural structure to invent novel anatomical forms.

Her works are mesmerising – living subjects coated, injected and bathed with other-worldly embellishments to create new bodies of exquisite imperfection. They are imbued with a haunting visceral realism that has become her creative insignia.~

Trained as a professional ballerina through her childhood and adolescence, she graduated from interior design at RMIT Melbourne. Lucy was brought into work at Philips Design in the far future design research programme. She is a TED fellow and has worked with Nick Knight, Aesop, Johan Renck, Robyn, Bart Hess, American Vogue and AnOther Magazine. She has exhibited at Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo and has run master classes at RMIT.

Architektura, performance, moda – te wszystkie dziedziny da się połączyć. W rękach takich artystów jak Lucy McRae wszystko staje się możliwe. Australijka przekształca ludzkie ciało i nadaje mu odrealnioną formę. Buduje na ciele struktury, które szokują i zachwycają jednocześnie. Prowokacja i groteska, które należą do jej ulubionych środków artystycznego wyrazu, odwołują się do wizji człowieka przyszłości, która niejednego mogłaby zaskoczyć.

Lucy od zawsze interesowała się tworzeniem wymyślnych konstrukcji. Wykształcenie architektoniczne połączone z doświadczeniem i pracą nad ciałem, które zdobyła jako klasyczna balerina nieustannie pchają ją ku przełamywaniu barier nie tylko cielesnych, ale przede wszystkim umysłowych. Razem z Duńczykiem Bartem Hessem (projektant wymyślnych strojów w teledysku „Born This Way” Lady Gagi) tworzy duet pod nazwą LucyandBart. Razem sprawiają, że patrzymy na takie materiały jak plastik, guma, pianka, a nawet zwykły papier, jak na odrealnione deformacje, które choć kruche mogłyby nam zagrozić.

Każda z przekształconych osób patrzy tępo przed siebie, a ich twarze nie wyrażają śladu strachu, ani podekscytowania. Reakcja jest po naszej stronie i najczęściej staje się ona tym gwałtowniejsza, im bardziej zdumiewa nas stopień manipulacji genetycznej modela. Powierzchowna ocena prowokuje do refleksji nad pochopnym wysuwaniem wniosków, co w codziennym życiu skutecznie uniemożliwia postawienie się na miejscu drugiego człowieka.
McRae na tym nie poprzestaje. Jej najnowszym odkryciem są kapsułki mogące pewnego dnia zastąpić nam perfumy, ale o tym w oddzielnym artykule.

LUCYANDBART est un projet artistique issue de la rencontre entre les artistes Lucy McRae et Bart Hess. Leurs œuvres témoignent d’un même intérêt pour le corps humain. Ici le corps est un lieu d’expérimentation génétique, mais aussi d’infection et de contamination. Dans nombre de leur clichés, la peau est recouverte de tumeurs cutanées et de parasites aux formes toujours plus étranges.

Ces oeuvres nous rappellent que le corps n’est pas une entité biologique résistante à toutes les attauqes microbiennes extérieures, mais aussi un hôte pour toutes sortes de virus et de bactéries. Et si les artistes de concert avec les chercheurs en génie génétiques étaient cappable de produire en laboratoire des virus comme le papillomavirus humain (responsable des verrues) avec des propriétés différentes (couleurs, formes, durée de vie…) ? C’est en substance ce que suggère ces oeuvres.

Les modification génétiques qui concernent le corps humain concernent toujours la santé et l’amélioration des potentialités physiques, pourquoi ne pas songer à faire aussi évoluer – dans un dessein artistique – les tumeurs cutanées bénignes et autres microtraumatismes qui pullulent sur le corps?

¿Cuáles son los límites de nuestro cuerpo? ¿Qué formas y texturas pueden adecuarse a nuestro corporalidad? Gracias a los avances tecnológicos, podemos jugar con lo que consideramos los límites corpóreos. ¿Qué es natural, o qué pasaría si transgredimos la silueta y textura de nuestro cuerpo? Esta curiosidad por la elasticidad humana es materializada en las obras de LucyandBart. La colaboración entre Lucy McRae y Bart Hess surge como una curiosidad, que ellos llaman primitiva, por la forma en que los materiales pueden incorporarse al cuerpo. Ambos tienen un interés por los avances genéticos, la interacción del cuerpo, performance y la tecnología.Sin embargo, su propuesta no busca un diálogo sobre bioética (a pesar de estar involucrado), sino un jugueteo con la morfología, e incorporación de los materiales y el cuerpo.

En sus propias palabras, LucyandBart, es un “acoso instintivo a la moda, arquitectura, performance y el cuerpo”. Los dos artistas trabajan como diseñadores, y arquitectos de un cuerpo lábil. No existen limitaciones, ni prejuicios, sólo una experimentación y manipulación de la visibilidad de la corporalidad humana. Sus ilusiones ópticas mantienen una dialéctica constante con la experiencia estética de lo repugante y fascinante. El rechazo ante el shock de lo inesperado y desconocido se recubre con la poética del espacio corpóreo. Si bien a veces se vuelve incómodo ver sus siluetas, la frontera con lo grotesco es delicadamente sobrepuesta. Entre lo bello, sublime e inquietante, LucyandBart, demuestran que nuestra imaginación, creatividad, y adaptabilidad, pueden seguir sorprendiéndonos.
