Library and Learning Center

The new Library and Learning Center rises as a polygonal block from the centre of the new University campus. The LLC’s design takes the form of a cube with both inclined and straight edges. The straight lines of the building’s exterior separate as they move inward, becoming curvilinear and fluid to generate a free-formed interior canyon that serves as the central public plaza of the centre. All the other facilities of the LLC are housed within a single volume that also divides, becoming two separate ribbons that wind around each other to enclose this glazed gathering space.

The Center comprises a ‘Learning Center’ with workplaces, lounges and cloakrooms, library, a language laboratory, training classrooms, administration offices, study services and central supporting services, copy shop, book shop, data center, cafeteria, event area, clubroom and auditorium.

Perhaps no building type has changed more in the past generation than the university library. Enormous book collections, once the organizing feature of these buildings, have lost their prominence as scholastic resources. Today’s college students, having grown up using the Internet, have little patience for a warren of “stacks” and laborious searches through printed materials. Therefore, a building prototype that was traditional, monumental, and static has given way to a new, more fluid style.The dynamic form created by Zaha Hadid to house the new Library and Learning Center for the University of Economics and Business in Vienna, Austria, makes a definitive statement regarding the contemporary function of a scholarly library.

BUSarchitektur was awarded the contract for a new master plan for the university in 2008; the scheme for the university’s new location involves dividing the campus into several zones, each of which is dedicated to a specific academic purpose. Zaha Hadid Architects won the competition held by the university to design the new Library and Learning Center, also in 2008. The structure will link the academic zones together at the center of the campus.

The building volume thrusts outward from its site in a series of polyhedra, each of which inclines forward as if to evoke a sense of aerodynamics. Glazed public spaces, curved in contrast to the linear exterior, wind through the solid building mass. Inside this multistory atrium, the sense of movement is established by forms that look more organic. Like an oceanic landscape, curvilinear walls appear to have been smoothed by erosion and are pierced by irregularly shaped ribbon windows and passageways, giving a reef-like effect. Deep structural ribs in the glazing ripple outward from the walls. Stratified floor plates continue the motif of an organic, weathered environment.

The all-encompassing programmatic functions of the Library and Learning Center — and of modern university libraries in general — were emphasized by the Rector of the University of Economics and Business, Christoph Badelt, in a quote following the competition in 2008: “A library and learning center should be more than a mere library in the classical sense: it is a research and a service facility, a workplace and lounge, a place of communication and a traffic hub, at one and the same time. With its breathtaking architecture, the design by Zaha Hadid manages to combine all the key functions of study in a most wonderful way. It is a vision that embodies this innovative concept of a university.”

Hadid herself said, “I am delighted to be working in Vienna as I have a close affiliation with the city. As a center of research, the Library and Learning Center is forum for the exchange of ideas. It is very exciting for us to be part of the University’s expansion.”

V týchto dňoch dokončujú montáž oceľovej konštrukcie vrchnej časti Knižnice a centra náuky v novom areáli Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (WU). Práve touto budovou od Zaha Hadid Architects sa v auguste 2010 začala výstavba šiestich univerzitných objektov približne päť kilometrov juhovýchodne od terajšieho sídla, ktoré má doslúžiť už po tridsiatich rokoch. Do novostavieb na okraji prírodného parku Prater v druhom obvode pri výstavisku a dostihovej dráhe sa škola presťahuje už v školskom roku 2013/2014.

Z úžitkovej plochy o niečo viac ako 100-tisíc m2pripadá takmer polovica na mohutnú 136-metrovú budovu Zahy Hadid, známu pod anglickou skratkou LCC (Library & Learning Center), čo je charakteristické pre školu, ktorej takmer štvrtinu študentov tvoria cudzinci.
V budove sa uplatňuje pre Hadidovú typický hladký pohľadový betón, náročné technológie spolu s estetikou šikmých línií a zaoblených hrán. Z jej tvorby predstavil portál TRENDreality.sk v poslednom čase múzeum dopravy v Glasgowe a sídlisko v Singapure.

Viedenská budova udivujúca šikmosťou pôsobí zvonku kontrastom svetlosivých, resp. strieborných, a tmavých častí štyroch blokov, ktoré oddeľujú súvislé presklené úseky.
Vrchný blok presahujúci polovičnú dĺžku budovy vyčnieva poza jej okraj. Prikrýva okolie vstupu, ktoré bude slúžiť ako ústredné priestranstvo. Vysunutý prvok s panoramatickým oknom pripomína Hadidovej veľmi úspešnú rímsku MAXXI (Národné múzeum umenia 21. storočia, 2010).

Montážou ôsmich častí 350-tonovej oceľovej konštrukcie bloku zvaného Canyonträger vrcholí dokončievanie hrubej stavby. Kaňonom nazvali projektanti centrálny priestor pod sklenou strechou, ktorý pozdĺžne pretína päťposchodovú budovu. Tento priestor sa od átria rozširuje do hlavnej univerzitnej auly a následne sa zužuje do koridoru pôsobiaceho ako kostolná loď. Z átria, ktoré susedí s dvoma slávnostnými sieňami, stúpajú špirálovité rampy a schodiská až do knižnice s nepretržitou prevádzkou vo vrchnej časti budovy.

Najväčšia ekonomická univerzita v Európe, o ktorej dlhej tradícii hovorí jej pôvodný názov k.k. Exportakademie, sa sťahuje už do štvrtého sídla. Vyžiada si 492 mil. eur, stavebné náklady odhadujú zhruba na 60 percent z tejto sumy.
Takmer 9-hektárový areál projektovaný pre 27-tisíc študentov je zastavaný z viac ako tretiny, zvyšok tvorí zeleň a komunikácie. Ohraničuje ho ulica Südportalstrasse, ale adresu univerzity určí ulica, ktorá sa ešte len stavia, a magistrát o jej názve zatiaľ nerozhodol.

Autormi budov sú rozdielne ateliéry: rakúsky, japonský, dva španielske, najznámejší sú však britskí tvorcovia – popri Zahe Hadid Peter Cook z CRABStudio, spoluautor Priateľského mimozemšťana, ako prezývajú Kunsthaus Graz (2003), ktoré navrhlo budovu W2, ležiacu južne od LCC.

Hadidovej pribudla vo Viedni druhá realizácia po dome nazvanom jej menom (Zaha-Hadid-Haus, 2005), ktorý stojí zhodou okolností vedľa terajších budov WU v 9. obvode. Britská architektka vyučuje vo Viedni na Universität für Angewandte Kunst na oddelení architektonického návrhu.

Zaha Hadid Architects otvorila 29. marca v AIT Architektur Salon v Mníchove výstavu Parametric Tower Research, na ktorej je prezentovaná prvá etapa jej bratislavského projektu Čulenova – 115-metrová veža. Od januára do začiatku marca bola táto výstava otvorená v Kolíne nad Rýnom.

La inauguración oficial del Campus WU, con una superficie útil de unos 100.000 m², tendrá lugar el 4.10.2013. La nueva sede de la Universidad de Economía de Viena, diseñada por oficinas de arquitectura de fama mundial y creada para más de 25.000 estudiantes y unos 1.800 empleados, se encuentra en las inmediaciones del Prater y de la Feria de Viena, en mitad de un emergente barrio de la ciudad y con acceso directo a la línea 2 del metro (U2). Rodeando el Library & Learning Center de Zaha Hadid Architects se hallan cinco conjuntos de edificios diseñados por CRAB studio (Londres), Atelier Hitoshi Abe (Sendai), BUSarchitektur (Viena), Estudio Carme Pinós (Barcelona) y NO.MAD Arquitectos (Madrid).

El nuevo campus de la Univesidad de Economía de Viena ha sido edificado en base a los principios de la bioconstrucción. De esta manera se produce más del 70% de la energía térmica mediante geotermia (aguas subterráneas) y todos los edificios disponen de sistemas de iluminación regulados por la luz del día y la presencia humana, mientras que los tejados que lo permiten han sido provistos de vegetación o de elementos fotovoltaicos. Las superficies exteriores del Campus WU son de libre acceso y sirven de zona de ocio a la población. Además se encuentran locales gastronómicos, una panadería, un supermercado, varias librerías, un jardín de infancia y un centro deportivo de uso público.

Studieren im Starambiente heißt die Devise jener fünf internationalen Stararchitekten, die die neue Wirtschaftuniversität Wien (WU) planten. Die Unger Steel Group realisiert die Vision der Architektin Zaha Hadid für das Herzstück des Campus, das Library- and Learningcenter (kurz LLC), mit einer anspruchsvollen Stahlträgerkonstruktion und zeigt Kompetenz im architektonischen Stahlbau.
Um Zaha Hadids Vision und Plan umzusetzen, wurde die Unger Steel Group als Stahlbauspezialist beauftragt, um die auf statischen Berechungen von Vasko & Partner basierenden Stahlkonstruktionen für diesen prestigeträchtigen Bau zu realisieren. Ein Projekt mit vielen Höhepunkten und technischen Herausforderungen: Benötigt wird eine Stahlkonstruktion der Extraklasse, ein sogenannter Canyonträger, der freitragend über 80 m lang auf rund 17 m Höhe schwebt und auf dem die gesamte Hauptstahldachkonstruktion ruht. Dieser allein wiegt beachtliche 350 t und wird in 8 Einzelelementen geliefert und vor Ort zu einer spannenden sowie umfassenden Konstruktion zusammengebaut.
Die Hauptdachtragkonstruktion besteht aus geschweißten Stahlteilen, die eine Höhe von bis zu 2,5 m aufweisen. Auf vorab betonierten Stahlrundrohrstützen werden diese Stahlträger angehängt und nach Gesamtmontage weiter vorgespannt um eine möglichst ebene Fläche zu erhalten. Das fertige Objekt ist elegant: die sichtbaren und schlanken Stahlträger machen in Kombination mit Glas den Werkstoff Stahl erlebbar.

A arquiteta iraquiana Zaha Hadid revelou mais um projeto de seu escritório: a Biblioteca e Centro de Estudos da Universidade de Viena, Áustria.
Desta vez, os arquitetos do ateliê baseado em Londres propõe um volume cúbico, com bordas retas e inclinadas, que cresce como um bloco poligonal.
Localizado em uma área no centro do câmpus universitário, o edifício se divide conforme os usos – bilbioteca e áreas de estudos – em torno de duas retas que fluem sobre imensas faixas de vidro.
As linhas retas do exterior, porém, se dividem e, conforme penetram no edifício, assumem formas curvilíneas.
O resultado são espaços internos fluídos que se associam como cânions ao redor de um core central, de onde se tem acesso a todos os ambientes.
