The Chilean artist’s fifth album was three years in the making, during which time Dinky studied jazz, classical guitar and piano, and thought, presumably, about how she might create something more in the vein of the bands she lists as inspirations in the press sheet, such as Mazzy Star, Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins. In the end Dimension D is less grand, ambitious and emotionally draining than what those influences might suggest. The tone ranges from one of breezy, summery melancholy (akin to Ada’s Meine Zarten Pfoten) to the overcast dissatisfaction of Ellen Allien’s Dust.
Naturally, Dimension D borrows from the dance floor. Its tracks are underpinned with bumpy, computerised bass, texturally varied drums and Latinate percussion, all lifted straight from the post-minimal house music textbook. It doesn’t all work (“Heathrow” is a banal ambient reverie, “Measures” plays ineffectively with Japanese scales), but Dinky’s clear talent for song-structure, not to mention her apparent love for surf and chiming 4AD-style guitars, means that her indie-dance hybrid impresses. The limber “Xanex” purrs seductively, full of clever detail. “Blind” sashays and twirls, a winning excursion into jazzy, Latin electro. “Falling Angel,” however, is the track that is most likely to transcend Dimension D. Unfolding with an irresistible ease, it’s as cool as the Chromatics and, in its middle-eight, has a wonderfully sad guitar solo worthy of Electronic-era Johnny Marr. For Dinky, there is clearly life beyond the dance floor.

Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera aka Dinky is a classically trained pianist and contemporary dancer. She came to Berlin a decade ago, after decamping from Santiago (Chile) by way of New York. Dimension D may be Dinky’s fifth long player, but it has the childlike innocence of someone who has just discovered their musical path. Co-produced by Matthew Styles, this album is truly a beauty to be hold and features Dinky’s own vocals. In some ways a world away from her dancefloor orientated material, it still features Dinky’s mesmeric soundscapes albeit in a more ‘folky’ setting. Highlights include the woozy Xanex, simply beautiful Fallen Angel and the jaw dropping Witches. Highly recommended.

Dinky was born Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera and was named Dinky by her sister at birth. As a Child she studied Ballet and the Suzuki method (Piano) Since very early age she showed a natural musical and artistic talent. Born and raised in Santiago to a musical family ,she is a leading member of Chile’s second generation of electronic-music greats.
It was in New York, where she had moved in the mid ’90s to join the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, that Dinky’s music career began to take off, as she immersed herself in the city’s vital underground scene of the day.
In her early twenties she turned out her first productions; within a couple of years she had release a spate of records in labels as Sonic Groove, Traum and Carpark, ranging from ambient, minimal house, techno to downcast new disco and electronic pop. In 2003, she moves to Berlin, a city that had captured her imagination nine years earlier during the heyday of E-Werk and Tresor. It was a good move: by 2005 she would release the massive “Acid In My Fridge” for Sven Väth’s Cocoon imprint ; the record became a massive hit .Dinky has gone on to become a regular fixture across the continental scene, playing regularly in the most important clubs, like DC10, Fabric, Amnesia or Cocoon Club, while in Berlin she currently holds the honor of a Panorama Bar residency since 2004. Dinky she never limits herself to one style. She has released 4 albums ,3 mix Cds and dozens of singles.
