Dragon King Harbor Bridge

Work: NEXT architects is awarded a first prize in an international competition in Meixi Lake besides Changsha capital of Hunan province in China. NEXT designed a bridge that is more than just a connection. The pedestrian bridge is one of the key projects within the Dragon King Harbor River development part of the vast development of the new lake district. Construction is scheduled for next year. The bridge is the key project for the development of the public space of the river park with recreational, ecological and touristic program. “The construction with the intersecting connections is based on the principal of the Möbius ring,” states Michel Schreinemachers. “On the other hand it refers to a Chinese knot that comes from an ancient decorative Chinese folk art,” adds John van de Water. With a total span of more than 150 meter and 24 meters high, the bridge connects a diversity of routings on different heights. The iconic appearance contributes to the developing identity of the area and with its lighting contributes to the whole light routing along the river. It provides both a view on the Dragon King Harbor River as well as Meixi Lake, Changsha and it surrounding mountains.
NEXT architects are Bart Reuser, Marijn Schenk, Michel Schreinemachers, John van de Water and China partner Jiang Xiaofei. NEXT is based in Amsterdam and Beijing. Projects include the Melkwegbrug in Purmerend (NL), The Citadel bridge in Nijmegen (NL ), In Weite Ferne so Nahe in Barendrecht (NL) and Chaoyang urban Planning Museum in Beijing (CH). In 2008 the firm received the Lensvelt De Architect Interior Award for their design of advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy (NL). All partners trained at Delft University of Technology and teach at a number of educational institutes.

NEXT Architects created this sinuous design for a pedestrian bridge over the Dragon King Harbor River in Changsha, China. The flowing form of the nearly 500-foot-long bridge is inspired by traditional Chinese knots and the Möbius strip. The design was recently selected in an international competition and construction will begin next year.

O escritório de arquitetura holandês Next Architects venceu a competição para projetar uma ponte de aço para pedestres em Changsha, China. A estrutura sob o rio Dragon King Harbour é formada por uma sequência de ondas e possui 150 metros de extensão e 24 metros de altura.
Michel Schreinemachers, um dos arquitetos responsáveis pela proposta, disse que a construção é baseada no princípio da fita de Möbius, além de referenciar uma superfície sem fim. Já na visão do arquiteto John van de Water, no entanto, a forma da estrutura também se refere à tradição da antiga arte decorativa chinesa.
