Koen Vanmechelen launched his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP) during the late nineties. Central to this artistic undertaking is a chicken crossbreeding project. More specifically, the artist interbreeds domestic chickens from different countries aiming at the creation of a true cosmopolitan chicken as a symbol for global diversity.
The project occupies a unique place in art history and gained fast international recognition. It positions art categorically in the middle of society: between people, and always committed. Vanmechelen is using a diverse range of media to translate the core idea of the CCP to our society, from very expressive paintings and drawings, to photography, video, glassware, performances and sculpture. The unifying theme is the chicken and the egg, symbols that link scientific, political, philosophical and ethical issues.

Since approximately 10 years Koen Vanmechelen is mainly engaged in his gigantic chicken breeding project The Cosmopolitan Chicken. In this solo-exhibition, his fourth at Deweer Art Gallery, he made an overview of the whole project since its beginnings and combined it with a live presentation of the last, recently born generation. The Cosmopolitan Chicken is a worldwide breeding project to which the crossbreeding of different national chicken races is central and crucial. The crossbreeding is the metaphorical quintessence of the dynamic, fertile and creative life and of the peaceful living together of different species and races. The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project officially started in 2000 in Watou (BE). As his participation in the exhibition Storm Centers, curated by Jan Hoet, Koen Vanmechelen crossbred the Belgian chicken Mechelse Koekoek (Cuckoo of Malines) with the French pride Poulet de Bresse, creating the first generation, the Mechelse Bresse. And Vanmechelen went on. Until now, The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project has produced ten generations. The descendants of each crossing are named after the first generation and the new race that is brought in. For example the eighth generation, the ‘Mechelse Fighters’, was crossbred with the Brazilian Auracana to create the nineth generation called ‘Mechelse Auracana’. Recently, Koen Vanmechelen has crossbred the Mechelse Auracana with a Turkish chicken called the Denizli longcrower. The resulting generation, the Mechelse Denizli, is on display in this exhibition. The first animal that reaches adulthood will be portrayed and when it has died a natural death it will be stuffed to testifie of it’s new generation, all of which was also the case with its predecessors. The Cosmopolitan Chicken is an artistic and aesthetic project that not only touches a lot of contemporary social issues such as genetic manipulation, cloning, globalisation, multiraciality, multicultural society, and so on, but also tries to influence the debate on these themes from an artistic and humanitarian point of view. Although the artist has a lot of inspiring contacts with the medical and scientific world, the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project has found its ideal setting in the art world.

Koen Vanmechelen é escultor, pintor e artista de instalações que confronta as fronteiras da arte e encontra ciência, filosofia e ética do outro lado da cerca. Seu principal projeto – mas certamente não único – é o Cosmopolitan Chicken Project. “Cruzamento é a coisa” diz Koen Vanmechelen: “Nós precisamos cruzar entre as fronteiras se nós queremos que o mundo não pereça. Nós precisamos pensar cosmopolitanamente. Nada é tão bonito como se unir a outras culturas e receber energia disto.”

Koen Vanmechelen es un artista contemporáneo que ha desarrollado una técnica exclusiva en la que mezcla diferentes medios. Su obra se compone de pintura, dibujos, fotografía, videos, instalaciones, trabajos en vidrio y esculturas en madera.

Lo que mantiene conectado a todos estos diferentes modos de expresión es el huevo y la gallina. A lo largo del tiempo ellos han sido un símbolo significativo que le permitió a este artista belga hacer una conexión con la ciencia, la política, la filosofía y la ética.

The Cosmopolitan Chicken ProjectEl cruce de las diversidades juega un rol fundamental en este proyecto, no solo en cuanto a las aves sino también a los soportes materiales y a las múltiples disciplinas de las que K. Vanmechelen se vale.
Con estos dos elementos Koen Vanmechelen está llevando a cabo un trabajo experimental llamado Cosmopolitan Chicken Project. CCP es el foco donde K.Vanmelechen trabaja y extiende un programa de reproducción con variedades de pollos de diferentes partes del mundo, desplegando una investigación acerca de lo que podría manipular a diferentes variedades de aves para crear una nueva especie: un pollo universal o Superbastardo.

El proyecto está atravesado por múltiples reflexiones acerca de la manipulación genética, clonación, globalización y multiculturalismo. De este modo el artista transforma al huevo y la gallina en una metáfora de la raza humana.

El cruce de las diversidades juega un rol fundamental en este proyecto, no solo en cuanto a las aves sino también a los soportes materiales y a las múltiples disciplinas de las que K. Vanmechelen se vale. De este modo el artista llama la atención respecto a cruzar los límites, en todos los sentidos de la palabra y, muy especialmente, respecto al entendimiento mutuo. Dice Koen “Necesitamos cruzar las diversidades atravesando los limites, si deseamos que el mundo no desaparezca. Necesitamos pensar cosmopolíticamente. No hay nada tan bello como unirse con otras culturas y energizarse con ellas.” Una de las facetas del Cosmopolitan Chicken Project es The Walking Egg. Allí se produce el encuentro del arte con la ciencia.

De este modo el artista llama la atención respecto a cruzar los límites, en todos los sentidos de la palabra y, muy especialmente, respecto al entendimiento mutuo.
Koen Vanmechelen trabaja conjuntamente con el especialista en fertilidad Willem Ombelet, un equipo de científicos, periodistas e intelectuales conectando estas dos ramas. Esta parte del CCP ha dado lugar al nacimiento de la revista The Walking Egg y a innovaciones que conjugan el arte y la ciencia como por ejemplo “Born”, un programa que se extiende en 7 habitaciones en el Genk Institute of Fertility Technology, Bélgica.
