From the architect. The architecture of the River Culture Pavilion ( ARC ) is an powerful formal statement that combines nature, technology and space. The bold curved form of the ARC is perched on a peninsula that juts into the river and surrounded by an awe inspiring natural environment. The building is a strong focal point set against a stunning panoramic landscape.

The architecture is comprised of a vessel shaped form that is clad in silver fritted ETFE pillows that through a play of transparency and geometry creates an ephemeral effect.

This atmospheric quality of the building enclosure is heightened by light reflections from shallow pool of water that surrounds the base. While the visible portion of the building sits atop an artificially formed landscape, the exhibition gallery concealed below is the space through which the visitors enter.

While the exterior of the ETFE clad structure captures the quality of the changing light with the open sky and river landscape as backdrop, the darkened and hermetic interior of the main structure houses an immersive multimedia environment illuminated only by projections of the abstracted and re-conceptualized qualities of the surrounding site.

The architecture enables the visitor’s experience to be an alternating play between a ‘real’ experience of the water, sky and landscape that surrounds the building, and a virtual experience as presented through multimedia.

Section
This experience culminates on the roof where a large reflecting pond reflects the sky and an observation terrace enables the visitor to overlook the site and its natural surroundings from yet another perspective.

the architecture of the river culture pavilion ( ARC ) by asymptote architecture combines nature, technology and space to delineate a bold and striking architectural statement on the city of daegu’s riverfront while pioneering immersive projection technology. the bold curved form of the arc is a strong focal point set against the panoramic surroundings. the material treatment of the buildings exterior contributes to the ethereal atmospheric quality of the pavilions presence on this site. the arc is designed to be in a symbiotic dialogue with it’s surroundings and the environs of daegu in celebration of the importance and powerful experiences of water and nature. the building houses a contiguous 60m x 20m seamless projection surface installed in the configuration of a moebius strip. the pavilion was initially opened for the world expo 2012 in south korea as one of the four rivers cultural pavilions and showcases the environmental four river restoration project. the 360 screen projection technology was configured and installed by domeprojection and auto-aligned and calibrated precisely for the 34-channel projection system. a seamless interior surface of the shell construction delineates the space of the main exhibition space as well as provides an uninterrupted skin for video footage.

La arquitectura del proyecto River Culture Pavilion ( ARC ) es una poderosa expresión formal que combina naturaleza, tecnología y espacio. La forma curva audáz del proyecto ARC está localizada sobre una península justo en el río y rodeada por un imponente entorno natural. El edificio es un punto destacado en contraste con un impresionante paisaje panorámico. La cualidad atmosférica del recinto del edificio es destacada por los reflejos de iluminación del espejo de agua que rodea su base. Mientras la porción invisible del edificio se sitúa por encima de un paisaje formado artificialmente, la galería de exhibición oculta por debajo es el espacio mediante el cual ingresan los visitantes. Mientras el exterior de la estructura recubierta del material EFTE captura las cualidades de los cambios de iluminación con el cielo abierto y el paisaje del río como telón de fondo, sus oscuros y herméticos espacios interiores de la estructura principal aloja un entorno multimedia inmersivo iluminado sólo por proyecciones de las cualidades abstractas y re-conceptualizadas de los alrededores del terreno. La arquitectura activa la experiencia del visitante para ser alternada con un juego entre una experiencia ‘real’ del agua, cielo y paisaje que rodea al edificio, y una experiencia virtual presentada a través de multimedia. Esta experiencia culmina en la azotea donde un extenso espejo de agua refleja el cielo y una terraza de observación ofrece a los visitantes vistas panorámicas del terreno y de su entorno natural desde otro punto desde otra perspectiva.

Fundado en el año de 1989 por Hani Rashid & Lise Anne Couture, el destacado estudio con sede en la ciudad de Nueva York Asymptote Architecture es un estudio internacional de arquitectura que se distingue globalmente con proyectos inteligentes, innovadores y visionarios que incluyen diseño de edificaciones, proyectos de planes maestros, instalaciones de arte, entornos de realidad virtual así como también diseño de interiores y diseño industrial.

El enfoque de Asymptote sobre la utilización de herramientas y tecnologías digitales, teorías contemporáneas, prácticas innovadoras de edificación y avances en soluciones de ingeniería y sustentabilidad ambiental han proporcionado al estudio una perspectiva amplia y sólida sobre todos los aspectos relacionados con el diseño arquitectónico y del urbanismo.

世界博覽會最能炒熱話題的，不外乎是各異其趣的展館與其建築理念，去年世博會在某個依山傍水的邊緣地帶，躺了一棟像碗盤又向枕頭的劇場館，特殊造型卻能與大自然有著絕妙的視覺搭配，毫無違和感。

河流文化多媒體劇場館（River Culture Multimedia Theatre Pavilion，簡稱ARC）由Asymptote Architecture設計，是個結合大自然、空間與建築技術的巨大結構體，在韓國2012世界博覽會首次展露頭角，去年6月才剛完工。在這個國際的博覽會中有四座河流展館，ARC便是其中之一，其興建宗旨在於提倡保護河流生態系統，並將此概念運用到治理河流工程上。

位於韓國北方大邱廣域市（Daugu，簡稱大邱）的人造河畔，半島地形的一側是茂密的樹林，另外三面環繞著清澈的人造河流，置身於大自然中的圓弧狀建築體，銀白色的外觀與周邊環境毫不衝突，卻又獨當一面地成為視覺焦點。

建築採用大膽的弧形曲線設計，遠看像碗盤容器；近看時，外觀一條條漸近線與一塊塊方形ETFE塑料材質，彷彿柔軟的銀色枕頭，在太陽光反射下，才能真正感受到其堅固的材質與軟的布料不同。每天不同時段，光的變化反映出天空與河流的美景；然而，室內卻是完全密封的狀態，沒有窗戶設計，因此完全由燈光照明。

▲主要展覽場地設有一個60公尺長的投影屏幕，流動著、變化無窮的視覺衝擊，讓我們更能在科技與大自然間感到反差。

整棟建築最吸引人的地方，大概就是擁有瞭望台的屋頂了！這裡有個很大的池塘可以反映整面天空，天色變化毫不保留的儲存在水中，站在露臺邊緣面對大自然，有種被放逐於城市邊緣的孤寂感，然而一個轉身，你又可以回到自己熟悉的現代化世界中。

▲從建築剖面圖可以看出，ARC除了展館本體，還有地下展區；與海盜船略為相似的的設計，看起來二樓的地面是傾斜的？到底實際展館內部是如何呢？

在真正的水、天空與自然景觀包圍下，ARC透過多媒體與虛擬體驗，讓遊客感受到兩者之間的落差與對應。

很多時候，太現代化的建築與自然環境格格不入，不過跳脫出木材、磚石打造的房屋，這棟河流文化多媒體劇場館雖然用了許多工業科技建造，卻能完全融入青山綠水中，實屬難得！

Studio Asymptote Architecture zaprojektowało niezwykły budynek – River Culture Pavilion (ARC), który łączy siły natury, technologii i przestrzeni w jednym. Obiekt został zaprojektowany dla południowokoreańskiej firmy Kwater Korea w mieście Daegu. Budynek ma zakrzywione kształty, a wewnątrz można obejrzeć różnego rodzaju wystawy, wziąć udział w warsztatach czy chociażby posłuchać muzyki.
