Katsuya Terada (寺田克也 Terada Katsuya, born December 7, 1963), is a Japanese illustrator and cartoonist from the town of Tamano, Okayama. His alias is Rakugakingu (ラクガキング “Doodle King”). Katsuya Terada is probably best known in the United States as the character-designer for the animated film Blood: The Last Vampire. He has also done work related to American comics, such as Iron Man and Hellboy (one of his illustrations was used for an official statuette of Hellboy). He also made additional contributions to old issues of Nintendo Power, including a special edition Strategy Guide for Dragon Warrior. In Japan, he has done the promotional illustrations for Detective Saburo Jinguji mystery-adventure video game series.

He was in charge of the book cover and illustrations for the Kimaira series written by Baku Yumemakura, and was in charge of cover design and illustrations for Garouden, Shin Majugari, and Yamigarishi as well.

Terada has defined himself as a “rakugaki” artist, more of a philosophy than a style of drawing, in which one draws a little everywhere, all the time, without thinking too much, on notebooks etc. He is a very prolific artist; one of his collections of sketches numbers more than 1000 pages, appropriately called Rakuga King.

He has done very little group-drawn work (an exception being the manga Saiyukiden Daienou (Monkey King)), his principal activities being illustration and character design.

His use of CG tools is integrated very well in his illustrations, giving his work a vivid and rich appearance. He has admitted various influences on his work, particularly European ones, like Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Moebius) and the magazine Métal Hurlant which he has said gave him a taste for strong women who are slightly stripped.

寺田 克也（てらだ かつや、男性、1963年12月7日 – ）は、岡山県玉野市出身のイラストレーター、漫画家である。通称、ラクガキング。
キャラクターデザインは、ゲームやアニメから実写映画まで多くの分野で行っており、海外の作品にも参加している。

中学時代は卓球部に在籍。岡山県立岡山工業高校工業デザイン科卒、阿佐ヶ谷美術専門学校卒。在学中からイラストの仕事などを任され、そのままフリーに。
阿佐美時代の同級生に造形師の竹谷隆之、1学年上に漫画家の桂正和、3学年上に映画監督の雨宮慶太、1学年下にやはり映画監督の佐藤嗣麻子と山崎貴がいる。CLAMPとの親交が深く、ギャグで「お師匠様」と呼ばれている。
絵はメビウス、エンキ・ビラル、フランク・フラゼッタ、生頼範義に強く影響を受けているほか、日本の漫画家では大友克洋、谷口ジローの影響も受け、この2人とは交友もある。モチーフの描写には手塚治虫の影響も見られる。一部で本人が好きだというあすなひろしも影響がある。
ゲームのキャラクターデザイン、小説の挿絵、漫画など数多くのメディアで活動中。アニメ、ゲームの分野での活動のため、海外にもファンが存在する。 萩尾望都、いしかわじゅん、鳥山明、横山宏、ナイキの社長らが寺田のPainterを使用した作業の見学に来た事もある。夢枕獏に「寺田克也よ　おまえはなんて絵がうまいのだ」と言わしめた 。大抵の物は描くが、唯一苦手なモチーフに「面倒くさい」という理由で建造物を挙げている。

Opened recently at Compound Gallery is the solo exhibition ‘Terra’s Black Marker’ by Japanese artist Katsuya Terada. Known for his contributions to film and video games, his work is also harvested in the comic series ‘Money King’ published through Dark Horse comics. His exhibition features stunningly kinetic works created entirely with black markers. The simplicity of the medium contrasts with the dazzlingly complex compositions; a fanciful world filled with the noble elegance of coiling dragons, a pale skinned beauty and other creatures caught inthe moment of flight or movement. Katsuya Terada was born on December 7th 1963 in Okayama Japan. He started his professional career as a comic artist and illustrator while he was still attending art school in Tokyo. He became a professional illustrator immediately after graduating art school which is very rarely seen in Japan especially without any representation from design firms. Terada’s art work can be found in all sorts of medias such as comics, cover illustrations, films and video games. Katsuya Terrada has worked on various full length movies as a concept/character designer. Films Terada has worked on include Zeiram, Yatterman and Cutie Honey but is probably best known in the U.S. as the character designer for the animated film Blood: The Last Vampire by Studio IG. He has also contributed design works to American films such as Hellboy and Sucker Punch. Terada’s career as a video game character designer is also well respected and best known to gamers for his character designs on Virtue Fighter 2. He has published a wide range of comics, Monkey King (Saivuki Den) being his most current full color comic which is roughly based on a famous ancient Chinese tale. Monkey King has been translated into Chinese, French and English and has developed him a fan base all over the world. He openly claims various influences in his work, particularly from French artist Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Moebius) and Japan based artist Katsuya Otomo best known for his creation of Akira. His works are not only 2d media, he has collaborated with Nike for sneaker design and has also done graphics for apparel brands. His new illustration book will be published by Dark Horse Comics later this year. This is his 2nd gallery show at Compound and first free hand drawn art work show in the U.S.

Compound is honored to have its 2nd solo show with world famous artist Katsuya Terada for the month of April.
We will only be showcasing original hand drawn art work. Terada focused on only using thick black markers as his medium from beginning to end for each individual art piece. Every piece was drawn free hand with out any type of sketching portraying nothing but commitment and raw talent with absolute masterpieces as a result.
