To Breathe, A Mirror Woman

When I decided to open a website using my name — which I hesitated to do for years because of its commercial aspect — I was hoping for an ideal society and relationship among people in the art world in which we could share real opinions with honesty, sincerity, dignity and love of art and life. I hope that my website project will not just introduce my activities but can bring more articulated discussions and criticism on art and the world.
I am careful to open this site, as mass media is one of the most influential media and another form of power which often leads this (art)world unfairly and untruthfully. But this is also what I wanted to work out and to bring out the true face of it — by opening another critical mass media to balance the public opinions. Think how much internet information and how many discussions are going on in this world — it is excessive. But I find most of them nothing but consuming information which have no content or true concern about art and the world.
I feel a responsibility now to put my endeavor to the (art)world in a modest way, even with one single person in this whole world to share and to support the real concerns — which I’ve been thinking for sometime, experiencing how the opinion of the society can be twisted by leading the public with wrong information or by not giving information, or by manipulating the reality mainly using mass media — partly because they are ignorant, partly because they are insecure, and are serving themselves for money and power. I wish to see the real art and meet real spirit, and to create something real with real people, and share it with every single person one to one, mostly discovering the ideas that have not been revealed or appreciated enough in this world.
One night, I suddenly discovered an important aspect in naming the website domain which keeps mostly one-word name — and it drove me to make up my decision to open a website for the public which I’ve been hesitating to do for years — like others,
A one word name refuses gender identity, marital status, socio-political or cultural and geographical identity by not separating the family name and the first name. Action One: “A One-Word Name Is An Anarchist’s Name” is my first statement for opening my website project.
You are invited to my station to share any concern or critical ideas and I will communicate with you one to one, posing questions, inviting significant artists, writers and thinkers, as well as curators in the near future.

South Korean-born artist Kimsooja has had a long, intense career full of installations, performances, photography, videos and site-specific project. This particular installation from 2006 is at the Palace de Cristal in Madrid.
Exploiting the structure of the building while also leaving it intact, Kimsooja installed a mirror on the floor to multiply and unify the original architectural space. A translucent diffraction grating film also covers the glazed dome and wall of the crystal palace. Awesome.

Created in 2006 by multidisciplinary artist Kimsooja, To Breathe – A Mirror Woman was an elaborate installation at the Palacio de Cristal, Parque del Retiro, in Madrid. Originally built in the late 1880s to house a collection of flora and fauna from the Philippines, Kimsooja transformed the Palacio de Cristal into a multisensory sound and light experience. A special translucent diffraction film was used to cover the windows to create an array of naturally occurring rainbows which were in turn reflected by a mirrored surface that covered the entire floor. Additionally, an audio recording of the artist breathing was played throughout the space to further enhance the experience.

Née en 1957 à Taegu, Corée du sud, Kimsooja vit et travaille à New York, Paris et Séoul. La renommée de son travail – installation, performance, vidéo, photographie – est internationale. Artiste nomade ayant fait de l’exil et du voyage le nœud de son travail, Kimsooja développe une réflexion sur le thème du déplacement de soi et des autres. Son œuvre, ouverte à différentes lectures (minimalisme, nomadisme, féminisme, bouddhisme, art politique…), transcende les cultures, les géographies et même le temps en reliant des éléments et des états apparemment irréconciliables de la condition humaine : nature et culture, tradition asiatique et modernité occidentale, mouvement et immobilité, action et contemplation, individualité et multitude, affirmation et effacement de soi, dans une démarche qui relève moins du jeu dialectique que de la recherche d’un état d’équilibre délicat, à travers la conscience de l’artiste, à la fois auteur, sujet et instrument de l’expérience du monde.

Радужная инсталляция от художницы Кимсуджи (Kimsooja) в Хрустальном дворце (Мадрид) Хрустальный дворец – одна из интереснейших достопримечательностей Мадрида. Его особенность в том, что здание полностью построено из стекла. По мысли архитекторов конца 19 века, именно так должны были бы выглядеть дома будущего. Спустя столетие, здания не стали строить из хрусталя, зато уникальный дворец сегодня используют как выставочный зал. В 2006 году здесь появилась оригинальная инсталляция талантливой корейской художницы Кимсуджи (Kimsooja). Ей удалось «разукрасить» стены и пол дворца во все цвета радуги. По воле художницы стеклянный купол дворца был обтянут специальной пленкой, а на пол были помещены зеркала, отражающие весь спектр красок. Визуальный эффект находчивая художница дополнила и звуковым сопровождением. Находясь в Хрустальном дворце, можно услышать запись дыхания самой Кимсуджи. Эту идею она позаимствовала из своего более раннего перфоманса «The Weaving Factory». Ритм дыхания неоднородный, так что у зрителей есть возможность вместе с автором инсталляции пережить разнообразные психологические состояния.

El Palacio de Cristal, uno de los espacios más atractivos y a la vez más complejos del circuito artístico español, vuelve por fin al primer plano de la actualidad (del Palacio de Velázquez seguimos sin saber nada) de la mano de Kimsooja (Taegu, Corea, 1957). El proyecto tiene un montaje muy complicado así que la artista ha estado yendo y viniendo para supervisarlo desde hace un mes. En una de estas visitas habló con El Cultural.Ya estaba cubierta buena parte del suelo y los técnicos terminaban entonces de colocar la película que rodea toda la estructura del edificio. Nos quitamos los zapatos y caminamos lentamente por el espejo. La sensación es rotunda. El cielo encapotado apenas permitía ver el sol pero, como cuenta Oliva María Rubio, comisaria del proyecto, de repente se abren grietas y entra la luz de golpe. Kimsooja conoció el Palacio en 2003, un espacio “bellísimo por su estructura arquitectónica y por su emplazamiento”. Ya entonces supo lo que haría si un día tuviera la oportunidad de proyectar algo ahí: “Pensaría en el modo de ocupar la totalidad del espacio sin tener que introducir nada en él”. Aquí lo tienen. El proyecto se titula To Breath-A Mirror Woman y será, a buen seguro, una de las grandes citas de la primavera artística madrileña.

Nata nel 1957, Kimsooja è un’artista di fama internazionale, rappresentante della Repubblica della Corea alla 55’ Biennale di Venezia. Con il suo progetto To Breath: Bottari, l’artista, presente a Venezia per la quinta volta, aggiunge un ulteriore tassello alla sua ricerca fatta di performance, video, fotografie e installazioni site-specific che indagano questioni di politica, cultura e storia del suo paese d’origine.
La sua carriera ha inizio nel 1988 con la prima personale realizzata presso la Gallery Hyundai di Seoul, ma è soltanto nel 2006 che l’artista inizia a confrontarsi con la realizzazione di installazioni in ambienti che investe letteralmente di luce, capaci di provocare nei fruitori sensazioni contrastanti di meraviglia e inquietudine. Come per To Breathe: A Mirror Woman (2006), installazione realizzata per il Museo Nazionale Reina Sofia presso il Cristal Palace a Madrid, o come per To Breathe: Invisible Mirror (2006), altra site-specific realizzata per il Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Kimsooja gioca con la luce naturale e i suoi riflessi colorati che fa entrare attraverso i vetri dell’architettura dispiegando e rifrangendo gli infiniti riflessi del sole in un caleidoscopio di spettri luminosi.
