Mathias Kiss is a man of tradition. He could have lived in the sixteenth century at a period when plastic arts consisted of a family, when architecture and sculpture were inconceivable without painting. Fascinated by the marvelous decorations in the history of French painting, Mathias Kiss deploys extraordinary skill and creativity. He reflects and questions past and future codes of housing.

In his work the topic of liberty is ubiquitous, as in the lines of the architectural elements of the Golden Snake cornice where classical order plays around with traditions. A brand new form of energy is granted to the architecture.

Mathias Kiss grasped the mirror to deliver a particularly striking contemporary interpretation. With Miroir froissé the faceted relief materializes from the wall in the same way as a sculpted work of art. Like a crumpled piece of paper the shape firmly interprets a rejection of the absurdity of the anonymity of the object, the magic of reflected light and fragmented image and the beauty of a hand-sculpted bas-relief.
The Igloo seat is a functional sculpture which confirms the ambition of the artist to convene a singular and emotional volume. It deploys its nine angles like a complex dihedral or a piece of broken ice floe.

The Mathias Kiss work is built around intemporal and stylistic references, using crafting skills and contemporary experimentation.

Continuity of a reflection on the crease and the deformation of rigid materials, the froissé mirror is a logical consequence of object-sculptures responding to his first work on the fold and two-dimensional sculpture.

Mathias Kiss, Hongarian, grew up in Paris. At 14, he joined an apprenticeship then joins the companionship for more than 10 years.

He devoted his first works to the realization of ceilings in parisian palaces; a recurring theme around freedom and defiance, the skies in all its forms became a great source of inspiration. In 2000, he had his first personal exhibition at the Teisso gallery.

He created the agency Attilalou in 2002 with Olivier Piel and opened a lab gallery in Marais, a place for meetings and experimentations, where his numerous creations and installations were born among photographers, stylists and designers. During this time, he created customized works for clients and professional art collectors, often «cartes blanches» in situ (still), and kept to work as the creative director of the company. In 2009, he designed his first Sculptural-Objects.

In 2012 the Galerie Armel Soyer edits 3 of his pieces, that are exposed in the artist’s first exhibition. In parallel to his personal projects, he will sign Marie-Hélène de Taillac’s new shop in New York with the architect Francois Bosc.

Parisian designer Mathias Kiss’s artistic practice is situated around reflection on and questions about past and future systems of housing design. His work is built around timeless stylistic references and experimentation, effortlessly combining traditional craft and with contemporary experimentation and materials. Since 2009, he’s been designing sculptural objects that are based on these codes of living and habitation. Related art objects and in-situ installations that Kiss produces explore larger environments and our perception of time and space. His Froissé Mirror confronts these ideas most literally—an intricate fold-and-crease system that is infinitely multiplied given the reflections of the mirrored surfaces.
