For Meejin Yoon imagination knows no boundaries and design transcends them. She uses design to transform the way people interact with the world around them. Founder of MY Studio and Howeler + Yoon Architecture and designer of installations, architectural projects, and clothing, Meejin Yoon investigates “the intersection between the body and architecture and space.” Her conceptual work engages the public: people respond to space – and her space responds to people. With whatever media she uses, Yoon’s projects merge humanity and design until actual existence of beings and objects becomes “mixed media”.
Yoon brought this philosophy to life, especially when she created the interactive mixed-media installation White Noise White Light for the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2005 MIT Inaugural Festivities for President Susan Hockfield. As visitors entered the interactive space from the street, fiberoptic reeds responded to the human presence with light and sound. The result was a sensory reciprocity: as people reacted to the project, the project reacted back.
The amazing result emphasized the very individual nature of personal space despite the public presence of which it is a part. By converging “white light, being a full spectrum of color, and white noise, being a full spectrum of frequencies within the range of human hearing, the design expresses the idea of accumulation, of the many in relation to the one.” Her projects are for everyone, but the projects communicate with each individual differently. “It can create a sense of play or a sense of solemnity, depending on the individual. But, more importantly, it is about engaging the multiple.”
