Overgrowth is a new and ongoing artistic collaboration between photographer Parker Fitzgerald and floral designer Riley Messina.

Inspired by a pursuit of beauty, Riley combines classically thoughtful botanical designs with Parker’s carefully considered film images in an expression of the multifaceted relationship between humankind and nature. The two artists contrast anonymous portraiture with sweeping landscapes in an attempt to capture both the malleable and untamed aspects of the natural world.

Overgrowth is a collaborative artistic project created by Parker Fitzgerald – the guy that takes most of the photos for Kinfolk magazine and Riley Messina – the gal that, if I’m not mistaken, did lots of the floral styling for this year’s Spring issue of Kinfolk, the one with the ice cream and flowers that made us go all gaga.

I’m totally going to be honest with you, I feel the concept of florals + faces is a wee overdone at this point, BUT the execution of this portraits (shot with film nonetheless) is beautiful. The floral design is just as awesome and works perfect with the models and the background. It’s whimsy (in the good sense) and somewhat creepy and dark at the same time – hence the feature on today’s post.

And even though it’s fall and there are hardly any wild flowers left, we can still enjoy a good ol’ session of floral design. In the face. Just the way we like it, right?

Overgrowth é um projeto artístico colaborativo, criado por Parker Fitzgerald e Riley Messina, ambos colaboradores da revista americana Kinfolk – Parker inclusive é o responsável pelo famoso ensaio dos sorvetes de flores que falamos aqui. O trabalho da dupla é carregado de uma sensibilidade ímpar, que soaria forçado para outros trabalhos que envolvem motivos florais e retratos, mas a composição que eles elaboram foge a regra e se destaca pelo tom meio sombrio e por vezes melancólico e misterioso que estabelecem dessa ligação.

Весна, как известно, время, когда все расцветает и зеленеет. «И даже пень в апрельский день»… Впрочем, о чём мечтает старый пень, известно всем. Художники также не остаются в стороне от сезонных метаморфоз. Творческий дуэт, в который вошли фотограф Паркер Фитцжеральд (Parker Fitzgerald) и флорист Райли Мессина (Riley Messina) представили новую серию работ, в которых нашлось место и человеку, и растениям.

Проект, получивший название «Overgrowth» – прорастание, бурный рост, должен, по мнению авторов, символизировать многогранные, противоречивые и отношения человека и природы. Анонимный персонаж и безымянные растения сосуществуют в пространстве классической портретной композиции, скрытые лица украдкой наблюдают за зрителем через причудливо упакованную фитодизайнером поросль, «какой-то дух ночным владеет садом»*.
