What may look like a series of surreal photo-manipulations, actually has little to do with Photoshop! Moscow-based physician Leonid Tishkov has been traveling around the world with a private moon for over ten years now. A lamp installation, which he originally created for a festival of contemporary art, quickly found its way to Leonid’s home and the two haven’t parted since. Leonid calls this project a “performance of a lifetime”, with the moon revealing more and more spaces to him as the time goes.
“The moon is a shining point that brings people together from different countries, of different nationalities and cultures. And everyone who gets in its orbit does not forget it ever. It gives fairytale and poetry in our prosy and mercantile world,” says Leonid, making it clear just how much his Private Moon means to him.
Finding her place in the most unexpected settings, the moon has been shot by different photographers. Leonid often relates his performance to poetry: “Poetry is born in the image. Before placing a Private moon in a place that I like, I look at it for a very long time. Often this is the place that I see as the basis of the poem. The world is beautiful around us, you just lluminate it with the light of poetry! In his autobiography, Broken Music, Sting tells the story of how he and a moon-obsessed drunk nearly came to blows, had it not been for Shakespeare. “I was accosted late one night on Highgate Hill by a staggering drunk. He grabbed me by the lapels and, after tranquilizing me with his foul breath, pointed to the moon, which had swollen to its fullness, and demanded of me threateningly, ‘How beautiful is the moon?…How beautiful is the moon?’ He repeated it as if he would kill me if I were to give the wrong answer. Thinking quickly and not wishing for an early toxic death, I fixed him with my eye and declaimed, ‘My mistress’s eyes are nothing like the sun.’ Shakespeare is always useful, I’ve found, for calming down violent drunks, if only because it gives them the impression that you’re crazier than they are. ‘A goodly answer…’ he said, ‘a goodly answer,’ as he set off on a tack for Kentish Town like a listing galleon.”
For Moscow-based physician-turned-photographer, Leonid Tishkov, the Moon is not so much an obession, but , rather, the star of a whimsical, and ongoing, visual poem. Private Moon is a fairytale that tells the story of the man who met the Moon, “and stayed with her for the rest of his life, Tishkov writes. Though the pieces are all part of a larger body of work, Tishkov insists they are meant to stand alone as complete works unto themselves. “Each photograph is a poetic tale, a little poem in its own right. Therefore each picture is accompanied by my own verse, which I wrote when I drew my sketches for the photographs.” In 2009, Tishkov made Private Moon public. “For more than six months,” he says, “the Moon traveled from person to person. Everyone could feel like an artist, everyone could experience a touch of poetry.” All told, Tishkov’s Private Moon has been traveling the world for more than a decade, illuminating not only the space around it, but also the imaginations of those who see it.

Μπορεί να μοιάζουν με μια σειρά από σουρεαλιστικές φωτογραφίες που έχουν υποστεί μετατροπή με το photoshop, όμως δεν είναι! Ένας γιατρός από τη Ρωσία, ο Leonid Tishkov, κάνει τον γύρο του κόσμου εδώ και 10 χρόνια με το προσωπικό του φεγγάρι. Το φεγγάρι αυτό δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο από μια κατασκευή με λάμπα η οποία είχε αρχικά χρησιμοποιηθεί σ’ ένα φεστιβάλ σύγχρονης τέχνης και που βρήκε ο Leonid και μετέφερε στο σπίτι του. Από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά οι δυο τους είναι αχώριστοι.
Εξάλλου, ο Leonid, έχει ονομάσει αυτό του το εγχείρημα ως performance of a lifetime και έχει δηλώσει γι’ αυτό ότι: “Το φεγγάρι είναι ένα αστραφτερό σημείο το οποίο φέρνει τους ανθρώπους πιο κοντά ανεξαρτήτως χώρας, εθνικότητας ή κουλτούρας. Όποιος μπει στην τροχιά του δεν το ξεχνά ποτέ. Δίνει μια παραμυθένια και ποιητική διάσταση στον αυστηρό και εμπορικό σημερινό κόσμο”.

El artista ruso Leonid Tishkov lleva 10 años viajando por todo el mundo con su instalación de arte móvil “Private Moon”, un trabajo que cuenta la historia de “un hombre que conoció a la luna y se quedó con ella para siempre”. El proyecto captura una serie poéticas de fotografías con una luminosa luna creciente tomadas en distintos emplazamientos de sus viajes por Francia, Italia, Rusia, China, Japón, Taiwán, Nueva Zelanda e incluso el Ártico.
“Cada fotografía es un relato poético, un pequeño poema en sí mismo. Por lo tanto cada imagen está acompañada por mi propio verso que escribí cuando saqué mis bocetos para las fotografías. Así que resulta que la Luna vence nuestra soledad en el universo que nos une a muchos de nosotros alrededor de ella. ” explica Leonid Tishkov.

Viel gibt es nicht, die Einsamkeit in den Dörfern des Uralgebirges in Russland zu bekämpfen. Es ist auch weniger ein Kampf gegen die allgegenwärtige Ödnis denn ein Arrangement mit einem guten Freund, der den Bewohnern viel Zeit zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem Leben gewährt. Arbeit hilft. Oder Poesie.
Der 1953 im Uralgebirge geborene und aufgewachsene Künstler und Poet Leonid Tishkov hat die wundervoll lyrische Geschichte des “Private Moon” ersonnen, ein visuelles Märchen, das vom Mond erzählt, der vom Himmel fiel und, von der aufgehenden Sonne und den hellen Lichtern der Züge geängstigt, Unterschlupf im Haus eines Einsiedlers sucht. Umsorgt mit warmen Decken, Tee und Herbstäpfeln, beschloss der Mond für immer bei dem Mann zu bleiben. Fortan sah sich der Mann in einem schönen Traum wandelnd, mit einem persönlichen Himmelsgeschöpf, der ihm stets den Weg zu leuchten vermochte.
Leonid Tishkov setzte diese schon auf dem Papier rührende Geschichte mithilfe eines illuminierten Mondes in eine ungemein ausdrucksstarke, ständig fortlaufende Bilderstrecke um, eine Art “lebenslange Performance”. Sein Freund der Mond begleitete ihn schon auf Reisen nach Neuseeland, China, Japan, Frankreich und Italien. Ja selbst in der lichtarmen Arktis brachte der Mond Licht ins Dunkel. Jedes Bild, das nach einem vorher angefertigten Entwurf entsteht, wird von einem selbst geschriebenen Vers begleitet, der die Geschichte des vom Himmelszelt gefallenen Mondes fortführt.

Der russische Künstler begann in den 80er-Jahren zunächst mit der Zeichnung humorvoller, karikaturistischer Comics, bevor sich seine Arbeit mit Anbruch der 90er immer mehr skulptureller und performativer Kunst zu entwickelte. 2002 begann schließlich die Reise des “Private Moon”, der zunächst ein privates Projekt bleiben sollte und dann im Rahmen einer Kunstaustellung in Linz 2009 publik gemacht wurde. Seitdem war Tishkov bei unzähligen Ausstellungen und Kunstfestivals, auch in Berlin, zu Gast. Er lebt und arbeitet in Moskau.
