A poetic way to communicate

Attachment is a website, a machine, a trip and You.
Thanks to a poetic machine connected to a website ( www.attachment.cc), you can send messages, images, or videos through a biodegradable balloon in the air.

Thanks to Lobsang Blanchard, responsible for Robopoly, a robotic and electronic association, at EPFL, Lausanne which help me to developp the technical part of the machine.

The Poetic machine and the journey

This poetic machine prints your message and a code on a sheet A6, slips it into a biopolymer cylinder attached to a balloon, which is finally released into the air. Then, the balloon will travel haphazardly to a potential recipient.

Where did the idea come from? The basic idea was to take a stand against the current use of «smart» technologies by creating a poetic concept, using current technology that allows us to communicate differently and rediscover expectation, the random, and the unexpected.

For the record, I have always been attracted by what is in the air and remember having won a balloon release contest when I was about ten years old. My balloon flew from Switzerland to Austria, this definitely left an impression on me and perhaps influenced the idea of this project.

The Website

The send page allows you, by entering your name and e-mail, to send a message and attach a image or video. Once your content is validated , the machine prints the message released into the air.

It may also be that you will be lucky enough to find a balloon and its message! On the discover page, you can, by entering the code written on the ticket, discover the digital content (video or image) linked to the message sent by its author. You then have the option to reply to the autor by e-mail.

After having typed your code and read the message you can locate your balloon where you found it on an interactive map. This map is available on the website displaying all the found balloons.

The Crowdfunding campaign

Regarding the high cost of the machine, i decided to start crowdfunding campaign on wemakeit.ch which ended successfully on the 18.06.2014. Thanks to all the contributors

What is next ? Environmental concern and research. Aware of the environmental issue that raises sending several balloons, we are using biodegradable latex balloons. Concerning the tube containing the message we have to produce or find lighter and biodegradable material.

A machine totaly automatic? For the moment the machine is almost completely automatic, but there are some steps that are done by human (the rolling of the paper, and the clip of the balloon), The project is now like a poetic performance between the human and the machine which is interesting as well.
But We also would like to make the machine totally automatic, so that it can be present in museum, gallery or festivals. The only interaction would be for users to activate the different mechanisms with buttons till the balloon is released into the air with the message.

Hello,
I’m a 25 years old Swiss designer based in Lausanne and Basel,
passionate about photography, architecture and new media.

Having freshly graduated from ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) in visual communication, Media and Interaction Design, I’m currently working as Visual Artist at the Digital Technologies Departement of
Herzog & De Meuron in Basel, Switzerland.
In September 2015, I will pursue a Master’s at the Royal College of Art in London.

The various projects realised at ECAL have allowed me to establish further interests in cross- disciplinary dialogues between technology, computer, art, electronics, architecture or physics.
At the moment, I’m particularly, interested in the social, cultural, ethical and ecological consequences of emerging technologies.

My diploma project Attachment, who will be finished next spring, has just received the support of Migros Cultural Procent and has been published in several magazines and websites.

I’ve also developed a strong interest in architecture during the last four years. An interest that I have included into several projects. Moreover, I had opportunity to work for 6 months at Philippe Rahm architectes in Paris, an architecture office which explores the relation between architecture, meteorology, technology and sustainable design.

Alongside my artistic practices, I’m leading various visual communication projects including the conception and realization of graphic charts, websites and videos for several customers such as Kairos Studio, Telecom System, InSwiGo etc. (Full portfolio available on request).

I’m also a member of Robopoly, a robotic association at EPFL, where i’m learning and experimenting with electronics and 3D softwares.
