Childhood Storage
source: anna-nicoleziesche
The film Childhood Storage is shot entirely within a detailed replica of Anna-Nicole Ziesche’s small first childhood bedroom. The film is inspired by the fact that mothers often preserve their child’s bedroom from the moment the child leaves home, creating a kind of physical storage for childhood. It presents ideas of how we are physically and psychologically shaped (and haunted) by our childhood and asks whether every decision and action is determined by an unbroken chain of prior experience; in what sense adulthood is the consequence of childhood. In what form is the childhood room actually stored? The mother literalises what the child has internalised, which goes on evolving into new forms.

Anna-Nicole Ziesche graduated in MA Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2000. Her shift towards film and performance art began in her last year MA Fashion when she made the film ‘Infinite Repetition’ for her final show at the Truman Brewery in 2000. The film suggested a new way of communicating fashion and revealed a process of continuously developing designs and shapes. Since then she continued her practice.
Early films were formal investigations of dress, and composition using film’s freedom to manipulate, magnify, and repeat both decorative details but also the body that they enfolded. Her film ‘Non-Bifurcated Diary’ (Portland Green – Capture4) was a departure from these as it was able to convey her core interests more adequately than her past work – the relationship between states of mind and dress and the performativity of the body conditioned by dress and space (physically and psychologically). It included a spoken, personal text, which was woven onto performed physical expressions of emotions as well as garment and body.
Anna-Nicole Ziesche works as a Visual Artist, a BA Fashion Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts and Research Fellow: Design for Performance at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, London.
