The multi-sensorische installation Be boy be girl engages sight, hearing, touch and smell. Here, our bodies become more than just our eyes and ears; they become the vehicles with which we challenge reality. Be boy be girl is an immersive installation. With an extended body, the moment of disbelief that results from the experience is delayed for as long as possible. The installation was created by filmmakers Marleine van der Werf and Frederik Duerinck with a keen feel for current events, Be boy Be girl creates an experience at the crossroads of spectacle and introspection, innovation and depth. It also gives a glimpse of what the future holds in terms of sensual, technical and cinematic design. Where Artist Julio le Parc created optical mirror effects using simple glasses made of plexiglass, this 3D-scent headset combines art, science, technology and sensory experiences.

Abstract:
“Be Boy Be Girl” é um experimento multissensorial que envolve visão, audição, tato e olfato. Na experiência, nossos corpos se tornam mais do que apenas olhos e ouvidos. Eles são os veículos para experimentar e desafiar a realidade.
Na instalação, criamos uma ilusão ao ativar todos os sentidos com uma combinação de cheiro, toque (através de luz infravermelha e um ventilador), imagem (com óculos de filme 3D em 360 graus) e som omni.
O registro do material do filme 3D em 360 graus aconteceu no Havaí e foi feito com 16 câmeras sobre uma plataforma. Essa plataforma para a câmera foi colocada sobre a cabeça de diversos homens e mulheres para recriar a mesma perspectiva que nosso público terá na instalação. O áudio omni, que muda a perspectiva sonora enquanto o espectador vira sua cabeça, foi criado especialmente para a instalação.
Biography:
Frederik Duerinck (Holanda, 1976) é um cineasta e artista baseado em Breda. É o designer-chefe da instalação multissensiorial premiada “Famous Deaths” e coautor do livro “Sense of Smell”. Seu documentário “End of Europe” venceu o festival de arte mídia em 2003. Frederik é membro do grupo de cross mídia Polymorf. Em sua obra, Duerinck pesquisa os limites da narrativa convencional, criando relatos corporizados. Além de sua carreira como cineasta e artista, Duerinck é coordenador do programa de Design Multimídia e Comunicações em Breda (CDM – Breda). Ele também é o cofundador do CMD Netlab.
Marleine van der Werf (Holanda, 1985) é uma cineasta e artista baseada em Roterdã (Holanda). Van der Welf completou seus estudos em cinema na St. Joost Art Academy em 2010. Sua obra de graduação, “illimited”, estreou na IDFA e o filme surrealista “The Perceptionist” foi indicado para o prêmio “Rene Coelho” pelo Dutch Media Institute e é representado na coleção de distribuição do Dutch Film Institute Eye. Em sua obra, ela explora ideias sobre imaginação, subconsciente e resiliência. Em 2014, ela foi a ganhadora do Programa Stipendium para Artistas Emergentes pelo fundo Mondrian e atualmente está desenvolvendo novas obras sobre a mudança da percepção corporal.

experimento multissensorial em 4D Be boy, Be girl, dos holandeses Frederik Duerinck e Marleine van der Werf. Envolvendo visão, audição, tato e olfato, a obra põe em pauta a questão do gênero de um jeito diferente. Por meio de óculos especial, o visitante entrará em um cenário praiano podendo ver e sentir todos os elementos típicos desse ambiente. O inusitado da experiência, é que o visitante poderá escolher viver essas sensações no corpo de uma mulher ou de um homem.

Abstract:
“Be Boy Be Girl” is a multi-sensory experiment that engages sight, hearing, touch, and smell. In the experience, our bodies become more than just our eyes and ears. They are the vehicles to experience and challenge reality.
In the installation, we create an illusion by activating all senses by a combination of smell, touch (through infrared light and a fan), image (with 360 degree 3D film glasses) and omni sound.
The shooting of the 360 degree 3D film material took place on Hawaii and was filmed with 16 cameras on a self build rig. This camera-rig was placed on top of the head of several man and woman to recreate the same perspective as our audience will have in the installation. The omni audio which changes perspective while the viewer turns his head was specially created for the installation.

Frederik Duerinck (NL, 1976) is a filmmaker and artist located in Breda. He is lead designer of the Award winning multi sensory installation ‘Famous Deaths’ and is co-author of the book “Sense of Smell”. His documentary ‘End of Europe’ won the media art festival in 2003. Frederik is a member of the cross media group Polymorf. In his work, Duerinck researches the boundaries of conventional storytelling, creating embodied narratives. Besides his career as filmmaker and artist, Duerinck is coordinator of the Communications and Multimedia Design program in Breda (CMD – Breda). He is also co-founder of the CMD Netlab.
Marleine van der Werf (NL/ CH, 1985) is a filmmaker and artist located in Rotterdam (NL). Van der Werf completed her studies in film at the St. Joost Art Academy in 2010. Her graduation work ‘illimited’, premiered at IDFA and the surrealistic film ‘The Perceptionist’ was nominated for the ‘Rene Coelho Prize’ by the Dutch Media Institute and is represented in the distribution collection of the Dutch Film Institute Eye. In her work she explores ideas about imagination, the subconsciousness and resilience. In 2014 she was the recipient of the Stipendium Program for Emerging Artists by Mondriaan fund and is currently developing new work about the changing body perception.
