These deer trophies are a playful take on traditional hunting and gathering for the hearth and home. They can be made to order in a variety of yarns and colors and all are life size specimens.
about:
Rachel Denny’s work is an exploration of the seductive beauty of our natural world and the imprint that human intervention has made on its flora and fauna.
Denny works in a variety of media and is inspired by the elegant forms found in the natural world and the time honored action of trying to depict these forms in a relevant way that is an homage to this beauty and wonder.
Denny is best known for her “Domestic Trophies” work—deer mounts covered in cozy cashmere cable knit woolens. She has shown in galleries nationwide for over 10 years and her sculpture is in many private collections worldwide. She lives and works in her rural studio outside of Portland, Oregon.

Rachel Denny loves to knit the great outdoors and the results are wildly whimsical representations of Mother Nature’s wilderness creatures. While accurate in depiction, the palette of colors and the knitted texture – especially the cable knit – create a fairytale aesthetic that is both elegant and majestic.
Best known for her Domestic Trophies covered in cashmere cable knit wool, her art is showcased in galleries nationwide and she is represented by Foster/White Gallery in Seattle.
When Rachel was a child she went with her dad on hunting trips. She never shot anything, but the hours of waiting and the seriousness of it all was a little surreal for her. It is this experience that led her to her Domestic Trophies.
The knitted taxidermy is a unique merging of both the feminine and the masculine.
Her creations are made from polyurethane foam, wood, wool, thread and a zipper.

Rachel Denny is a Portland-based artist creating stunning mirrored snakes, howling wolves, waxy woodpeckers and her signature deer heads. Her sculptural works are colourful and beautiful with a little touch of fun and humour. Rachel created one knit deer trophy for her own home around five years ago and everyone that visited responded to the piece. So she began to experiment with patterns and texture and just began to make more of the trophy series. She started using old knitted sweaters and various found materials to create what she calls “an exploration of the seductive beauty of our natural world.” When she was young, she lived in an old farmhouse “in the middle of nowhere in Idaho.” She loved walking in the forest which seemed quite mysterious place for her. These early experiences certainly have shaped her affinity with animals and nature.
