Since its launch in 1996, the aims of the Yokohama Dance Collection have been to discover and foster young choreographers and to promote the spread of contemporary dance. The competition at the heart of its dance festival framework highly values originality in choreography by artists who bring fresh perspectives to creative expression, using the body in ways in tune with their times. As part of the preparations for the 22nd Yokohama Dance Collection in 2017, we partnered with the Yokohama Museum of Art to present a special exhibition with the theme BODY/PLAY/POLITICS (October-December 2016). Additional components in our framework include performances of works by globally active artists and, as part of our collaborative projects with other dance festivals throughout Asia, a dazzling variety of programs contributing to the creation of a shared dance platform for Asia.

Damien Jalet has travelled the world, infusing his dance with images of the myths, religions, and rituals of each country that he visits, and reflecting the conflict between body and mind in the dance. Nawa Kohei explores materials and techniques through his sculptures and installations that communicate an organic world view while successfully combining image and materiality. As the basic concept for this part of their collaborative project, Jalet and Nawa chose “vessel”—the background to everything that is subsumed by life and death, and the cycles of earth and life. Incorporating into the stage design a breadth of physical properties that extends to gases, liquids, and solids, they attempt to create a dynamic merger between the stage and the bodies of the dancers as they constantly transform their figures.

Damien Jalet est un chorégraphe-performer franco belge. Sa danse est instinctive, brute, très technique voire scientifique. A travers de nombreuses collaborations Damien Jalet s’interroge sur le corps en tant que matière et centre de plus en plus sa reflexion autour de la question du fondamental. “Quel est le disque dur ? A quoi ont ressemblé les premières danses ?”. Il fait murir cette réflexion aux 4 coins les plus reculés de la planète en découvrant des rituels animistes tout en s’interessant également aux musiques de tradition orale.
Il se nourrit de ses voyages, “La danse a cette possibilité de pouvoir justement être sans frontières. Je suis très reconnaissant par rapport à cet art, il m’a permis de découvrir des choses incroyables.”

ディレクターの1人である名和晃平が舞台美術を、振付をベルギーのダミアン・ジャレが担当したダンス作品。名和が舞台上に作り上げた水面で、森山未來をはじめとするダンサーたちは皆、腕で顔を隠し、人間というより肉塊がうごめくような動きをし、それをさらに深化させるように原摩利彦が重たいサウンドを絡めていく。正直、気持ち悪ささえ感じる動きはコンテンポラリー・ダンスとしてもかなり異色なもので、観客はただただ圧倒されていた。本作は10月に岡山県の犬島、そして来年1月には横浜公演も予定されているので、興味のある方はぜひ観覧してほしい。
