Mitsuo Katsui was born in Tokyo in 1931. After graduation from Tokyo University of Education, he joined Ajinomoto in 1956 and founded his own studio in 1961. He was art director of the Japan World Exposition in Osaka (1970), the International Ocean Exposition in Okinawa (1975), and the International Exposition of Science and Technology in Tsukuba (1985). He is Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University. Mitsuo received of numerous awards, including: Tokyo ADC Members Award, Mainichi Design Award, Kodansha Publishing Cultural Award, Katzumie Masaru Award, Minister of Education Art Incentive Award, Japanese Government Medal with Purple Ribbon, N.Y. ADC Gold Prize, Gold Prize at Lahti International Poster Biennial, Gold Prize at Brno Biennial of Book Design, Grand Prix at Poster Biennial of Mexico, and Gold Prize at Warsaw International Poster Biennial.

(1931- ) After graduation from Tokyo University of Education, Mitsuo Katsui joined the graphic design firm Ajinomoto in 1956. Five years later he started his own firm. In addition to engaging in the full spectrum of graphic design, Mitsuo served as art director of the Japan World Exposition in Osaka (1970), International Ocean Exposition in Okinawa (1975), and International Exposition of Science and Technology in Tsukuba (1985). He also created the symbol for the International Garden and Greenery Exposition in Osaka (1990).
Mitsuo is credited with pioneering new forms of visual expression enabled by new technologies. He is a Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University and Director of Chameleon Project, a member of the Board of Directors of JAGDA and of Japan Display Association. He is also a member of Tokyo ADC and AGI.
He has received numerous awards, including the Tokyo ADC Members Award, Mainichi Design Award, Kodansha Publishing Cultural Award, Katzumie Masaru Award, Minister of Education Art Incentive Award, Japanese Government Medal with Purple Ribbon, N.Y. ギンザ・グラフィック・ギャラリー(ggg)の2014年の幕開け、1月展は「勝井三雄展 兆しのデザイン」を開催いたします。
デジタル技術など最新のテクノロジーやメディアを取り込みつつ、半世紀以上にわたり常にグラフィックデザイン界に新たな領域を切り拓いてきた勝井三雄氏。ポスター、エディトリアル、シンボルマークなどのデザインをはじめ、数々の万博にアートディレクターとして参加するなど、様々なイベントの企画や演出と、多様なジャンルでの活動を続けています。
今回の展示では、勝井氏の創造活動を語る上で重要な位置を占めるであろうエディトリアルワーク、厳選した珠玉の約100作品に加え、主要なポスター作品も紹介。一階ではポスターデザインと連動した、実験精神に溢れる新たな映像作品も展示する予定です。
