Abstract:
Alex Verhaest investiga contrastes, semelhanças e a simbiose/fusão entre homem, máquina, ator e computador. No momento, Alex está envolvido no projeto de um filme que relata a história de uma família envolvida em um antigo drama familiar. A história é distribuída por uma ampla gama de obras distintas, cada uma delas representando um certo momento. Por exemplo, os Character Studies (estudos de personagem) representam uma análise pessoal dos cinco personagens do filme.
Os espectadores são encorajados a formar laços entre esses elementos díspares. Desse modo, Verhaest expõe as mecânicas que conduzem a mídia do filme. Como se cria uma narrativa ou um personagem? Qual é o papel da edição nesse processo? O que é alienação e como se conduz o público a entrar na ilusão? Não necessariamente respondendo essas perguntas, mas sim propondo-as, o público pode editar os elementos distintos criando seu próprio filme coeso.

Abstract:
Alex Verhaest investigates contrasts, commonalities and the symbiosis/fusion between man, machine, actor and computer. At the moment, Alex is involved in a film project relating the story of a family embroiled in an age-old family drama. The story is spread out across a wide range of distinct works, each depicting a certain moment. For instance, the Character Studies represent a personal analysis of the five characters from the film.
Spectators are encouraged to form bonds between these disparate elements. In this way, Verhaest exposes the mechanics that drive the medium of film. How does one create a narrative, or a character? What role does editing play in this process? What is alienation and how does one move an audience to enter into the illusion? Not necessarily by answering these questions but rather by posing them, audiences may edit the distinct elements into their own cohesive film.

Temps Mort/Idle Times est le résultat de la fascination de Verhaest pour l’art du bas Moyen Age et de la haute Renaissance, le symbolisme, l’usage de couleurs et les bizarres personnages. Cette fascination devient claire dans son œuvre Temps Mort, dans laquelle elle raconte un drame familial à l’aide de ces références formalistes. Pendant Watou 2012, vous avez déjà pu goûter d’une introduction des cinq personnages, sous forme de portraits mouvants. À TAZ elle a présenté une scène dans laquelle les spectateurs sont invités à participer de façon interactive.

Temps Mort/Idle Times is het resultaat van Alexandra Verhaests jarenlange fascinatie voor kunst uit de late middeleeuwen en de vroege renaissance, voor de symboliek, het kleurgebruik, de bevreemdende personages. Deze fascinatie vertaalt zich op een intrigerende manier in haar werk Temps Mort, waarbinnen ze een familiedrama vertelt gebruikmakend van die vormelijke referenties. Tijdens Watou 2012 kon je al een introductie zien van de vijf personages, in de vorm van bewegende portretten. Op TAZ presenteert ze een scène uit het verhaal waarbij je als kijker op een interactieve manier wordt uitgenodigd om deel te nemen.

Verhaest’s work is largely focused on language, story and the impossibility of communication. The basis of each project is a highly narrative script, existing or newly written, around which she creates a body of work by analyzing its storyline and exploring the limits of what constitutes communicable language. Verhaest’s highly pictorial work operates on the juxtaposition of painting and video, each new project being an investigation into unorthodox contemporary technology.
During her MFA year, Verhaest travelled to China where she discovered the Asian hacker subculture. She was invited to participate in a six-month residency at island6 Arts Center in Shanghai where she joined the former artist collective ‘Platform for Urban Investigations’. She then travelled to Mexico DF, Eindhoven and Salvador da Bahia where she participated in group-shows of the collective at the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, the Van Abbe Museum and the Museo de Arte Moderna. In 2009 she decided to focus more on her own practice and to leave the collective, which resulted in participations in several group exhibitions around Belgium and the Netherlands. In September of 2013, her debut solo Temps Mort/Idle Times opened at Grimm Gallery, Amsterdam. Her work has been selected by several arts and new media festivals and competitions; i.e. the FILE electronic language festival in Sao Paolo, the New Technology Art Award in Gent, TAZ oostende and Arts Festival Watou, and her work is featured in the Akzo Nobel Collection.

Alex Verhaest is an artist who tries to expose the mechanics of the medium of film. How does one create narrative, or a character? What is alienation and how does one move an audience to enter into the illusion? She draws inspiration from a variety of sources for her work, 15th century old master painting as well as writer Haruki Murakami and the neo-baroque aesthetics of filmmakers like David Lynch and Matthew Barney.
The work of Alex Verhaest is swiftly gaining attention in the art world and has so far been included in ‘Beyond Tradition’ (2013, Garage, Rotterdam), ‘Museum Night’ (2011, Rubenshouse, Antwerp) and she exhibited at ‘Watou Kunstenfestival’ (2012), ‘Biennale Internation- al de la Photographie et des Art Visuels’ (Liege, 2010) and was selected for ‘Platform for Urban Investigation’ in Shanghai.
