Trafficking in a subtly surreal sense of illusion, British artist Alice Channer makes hard materials, such as marble and steel, appear malleable and fluid, and brings a complex sculptural presence to flat images. Her works, which often take the form of photographs printed on long narrow bolts of fabric, cascade from ceilings in cavernous rooms or undulate on the floor. As they take on architecture, the pieces address various industrial processes, from the machining of metal to the manufacture of beauty products. Channer has mounted recent solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany; Lisa Cooley, New York; and South London Gallery; and she recently realized a major installation for the 55th Venice Biennale, Il Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace).

A mixed-media sculptor and textile artist, Alice Channer creates works that explore the fluid nature of the body and its relationship to its surroundings. Working with a diverse array of materials, from metal and concrete to textiles and resin, Channer utilizes her media in unexpected ways, creating an interplay between her materials that surprises and even disorients the viewer. The figure of the body plays heavily in her installations, which often feature fabric printed to evoke hair or skin, curving steel rods that evince the human spine, and draped sculptural installations made of women’s clothing.
