‘eternity’ is a wall mounted sculpture made by american artists alicia eggert & mike fleming, consisting of 30 electric clocks rear-mounted to a large sheet of white acrylic. during installation, the black hour and minute hands of the clocks are aligned to spell the word ‘eternity’, and the clocks are plugged in to a series of power strips on the floor. the hands begin to move as soon as the switch on the last power strip is flipped, and the word almost immediately becomes a jumble of moving black lines.

‘eternity’ does not reappear until the hour hands return to their original positions twelve hours later. and even then, it last a mere split second.

Bio

I am an American interdisciplinary artist whose work primarily takes the form of kinetic, electronic and interactive sculpture. Before pursuing a career in art, I earned an undergraduate degree in interior design and practiced at an architectural firm in New York for several years. After leaving that field, I went on to receive my MFA in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies. My artwork, which remains strongly rooted in design, focuses on the relationship between language, image and time. It has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and is currently included in “O’Clock. Time design, design time,” a traveling exhibition originally held at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, which places my work in the company of artists such as John Cage and Damien Hirst. Other recent exhibitions include SIGGRAPH Asia in Hong Kong; ISEA (the International Symposium on Electronic Art) at the Albuquerque Museum of Art in New Mexico; CYBERFEST in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Sculpture By the Sea in Sydney, Australia. Other institutions that have exhibited my work include the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, and various galleries/festivals in the US, UK, Poland, Belgium and Canada. My work has also been featured on websites such as VVORK and designboom, and included in a Victionary publication titled Typoholic: Material Types in Design.

I have recently been awarded the very prestigious TED Fellowship, a program that, according to their literature, “is designed to bring together young world-changers and trailblazers who have shown unusual accomplishment and exceptional courage.” As a TED2013 Fellow (one of only twenty-one people world-wide, and of only eleven from the US), I will have the opportunity to present my work in a talk at TED2013: “The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered.”

I currently live in Portland, Maine, and teach sculpture and architecture at Bowdoin College.

Artist Statement

As a conceptual artist, my work always begins and ends with an idea, and the materials I work with are chosen based upon their ability to communicate a concept as clearly and concisely as possible. The more I refine my ideas and develop as an artist, the more I find language to be the most direct and appropriate material for realizing them. The most refined ideas can be expressed by a single word. At the surface level, language appeals to me because it’s accessible. In order to understand the work, a person only needs to know how to read. But upon closer inspection, language has the ability to contain a multitude of complexities. One simple word can contain a world of meaning.Wonder is both a noun and a verb. It is a “feeling of surprise caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable.” It is also an action, a “desire to know something” that is currently unknown. To wonder is to play, and like a child, discover something unexpected about yourself and the world around you. My art practice is founded on my own sense of wonder, and my personal goal is to create works of art that inspire a sense of wonder in others.Because my art practice is driven by concept as opposed to process, my most successful work is made in collaboration. Many artists enjoy working alone in their studios, but I prefer making work in conversation. It allows me to share the experience, the excitement, the responsibility and the success with another person. The final product is essentially also a collaboration, this time between the artists and the audience. In the end, the work is yours as much as it is mine.

L’esperienza sensoriale del tempo è stata da sempre oggetto di ricerca per l’uomo. Il tempo è qualcosa di così indefinito e inappropriato e nascosto e mistico e crudele e indeterminabile, se non con regole secolari che ci sforziamo di accettare giornalmente.
In che modo l’esperienza inesorabile del tempo, può essere visivamente percepita? L’artista Alicia Eggert ha in qualche modo cercato di rispondere a questa domanda, presentando un’installazione di 30 orologi, che con il movimento delle lancette -appositamente sistemate- rendono visibile l’ “eternità” ogni 12 ore.

“Eternity”, o “Eternidad” en español, es una escultura montada en la pared creada por los artistas americanos Alicia Eggert y Mike Fleming, la cual consiste en 30 relojes eléctricos que son sostenidos en una gran placa blanca de acrílico y conectados a una serie de bandas de energía ubicadas en el suelo. Durante la instalación, las manecillas negras, que señalan tanto las horas como los minutos, son alineadas de tal manera que forman la palabra ‘Eternity’ por una fracción de segundo, para luego volver a perderse en un juego de líneas de diferentes tamaños que giran sobre su propio eje a destiempo. Dicho evento ocurre de nuevo hasta que las agujas vuelven a su posición original, esto es, 12 horas más tarde.
