Hammering nails into a Vogue cover, slicing up models in advertisements, cutting shapes fashion editorials: Dutch artist Amie Dicke isn’t afraid to cross some lines to share her vision. In the book ‘Hell Bound’ Amie cites: “Perhaps it’s the certainty of decay that makes beauty so appealing.” The results of her alterations are gorgeously dark pieces, from sculptures to photo manipulations.

Amie Dicke started cutting away fashion posters when she was on a residency in New York. ‘I started to project my loneliness on the city where the most familiar faces were those of the supermodels on the buildings and in the magazines,’ she has said. Dicke turns the familiar images of advertising into something rare and strange, revealing the dark, gothic structures that lie beneath their surface. Images intended to project desirability, are exposed as empty and hollow. The models appear as phantoms, the flow of forms echoing tears as they cascade down the body.

I was amazed to find her work because I share her vision in such a way that I felt like I invented her. But you know that feeling when you’re interested in something and it’s like everybody else is interested in the same thing as well exactly in the same way as you are or they are already doing it. It’s your effusiveness that makes you see things that you never acknowledged before although they were there all the time. That’s how I felt when I read about Amie Dicke.
“I found myself surrounded by the world of fashion and glamour. On buildings and metro-stops, glowing lips and shining eyes were tempting me, like they were saying I started to project my loneliness on to the city where the most familiar faces were those of supermodels on buildings and in magazines.” (…) “It all started with a series of sculptures I made just before I graduated from art school in 2000. I observed other women. I was looking for a personal style or unique attitude or stance and, quite literally, tried to obtain one by studying the positions and shapes of the female body.”
