Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate, or affectionately The Bean, by Anish Kapoor is probably my favorite public art installation in Chicago. No matter how many times you visit the experience is always different depending on the time of day, the weather, who you’re with, and what’s happening in the general vicinity of the giant mirrored surface. The Bean is in a perpetual state of visual flux.

For the next 10 days Chicago creative ensemble LuftWerk, the creative vision of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, have capitalized on the sculpture’s reflective properties by turning it into a canvas for a choreographed light show titled Luminous Field. The duo are using an array of ten projectors to create the experience, setting everything to music composed by Owen Clayton Condon of Third Coast Percussion. This is the first site-specific work involving Cloud Gate since its construction in 2004. Luminous Field opens tonight at 6pm and runs through February 20th.

Este fim de semana o Millenium Park de Chicago inaugurou uma instalação bacanérrima. Aos pés do famoso Cloud Gate de Anish Kapoor (ou simplesmente The Bean, para os mais chegados), os artistas Petra Bachmaier e Sean Gallero, do LuftWerk, apresentam o Luminous Field, uma espécie de tapete virtual criado com 10 projetores.

A ideia da dupla foi tirar partido das características da escultura de Kapoor (hiper-refletiva e enorme) para potencializar o efeito da coreografia luminosa criada por eles. E o efeito ficou sensacional!

Incrível pensar que esta é a primeira instalação site-specific envolvendo o Cloud Gate desde que ele foi implantado no Millenium Park, em 2004. Uma pena que será temporário: a obra fica “em cartaz” só até o dia 20 deste mês. Vontade de ver ao vivo!!

Luminous field komt tot stand dankzij 10 enorme video projectoren welke zijn geplaatst op vier torens. De projectoren richten zich op de zogenoemde Cloud Gate, een reusachtige boon-vormige sculptuur gemaakt door Anish Kapoor in 2006.

In series van 5 minuten wordt er een video afgespeeld. Daarbij dient het plein + het sculptuur als mega projector (25 m x 9 m). De videos variëren van funky disco tot kleurrijke geometrische patronen.

Het idee van het luminous field is dat mensen er ‘in’ kunnen gaan en vervolgens met de beelden kunnen spelen. Het resultaat is een virtuele speelplaats van licht.
