To honour the structural renovations to the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art (MAMAC) in Nice, Gilbert Perlein, Chief Curator and Director of the MAMAC invited internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Arne Quinze to make a public art intervention. Arne Quinze known for his large scale wooden and metal public art installations was the reference of choice to inaugurate the museums new start. Evoking communication and social interaction is Arne Quinze’s biggest artistic driving force. Primarily by means of his large-scale constructions located in public places, he has amazed many a passer-by.
The wooden sculpture named ‘Hommage à Alexander Calder’ will be constructed from 8 april onwards and inaugurated the 19th of april. During the summer months and until spring 2014 this installation will evoke a dialogue between the museums architecture, the city and it’s public.
Arne Quinze was born in 1971 in Belgium and lives and works in Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium. In the eighties he began working as a graffiti artist but he never finished an official art education. Quinze creates large and small sculptures, drawings, paintings, and large-scale installations. Smaller works, sketches, and drawings are the basis and research for his large installations. Recurring fundamentals in his oeuvre are the use of multiple types of wood, including salvaged wood; electrical colors in fluorescent paint; and themes referring to social interaction, communication, and urbanism. Since a while he’s doing research towards large steel installations.
What drives Quinze is the belief in the possible realization of an idealistic society where all individuals communicate and interact, aiming to bring people together and push them into a vigorous dialogue. In his urban vision, communal activities flourish and social cohesion is the norm. His installations are built to provoke reaction and to intervene in the daily life of passersby confronted with his sculptures. His unconventional public installations have challenged perceptions in the city centers of Belgium (Cityscape, The Sequence), Germany (The Traveller), France (Camille, Rock Strangers), Lebanon (The Visitor), China (Red Beacon) and the USA (Uchronia, Timegate), among others.
In every culture Quinze comes across, he unravels physical processes, drawing inspiration for his oeuvre, and is fueled by overwhelming optimism. Every new creative breed captures his research and study on interaction, and urban movement expressing the continuously evolution of human beings and their surroundings. Besides building architectural sculptures, he creates complex art pieces and video installations inscribing his vision in society of how people see themselves and society. Works as Bidonvilles, Stilthouses, Chaos and My Home My House My Stilthouse, My Secret Garden have been shown on several exhibitions.

Dans les années 80, il commence son éducation artistique en tant que graffeur, il n’a pas suivit un cursus d’enseignement officiel dans l’art. Arne Quinze crée de grandes et petites sculptures, mais aussi des dessins, des peintures et des installations à grande échelle. Les oeuvres plus petites telles que ses esquisses et dessins sont la base de ses recherches pour ses grandes installations. Les lignes directrices de son travail sont tout d’abord le travail de différents types de bois, y compris du bois récupéré, l’utilisation de couleurs électriques à travers des peintures fluorescentes, mais avant tout et surtout le travail autour de la communication et de l’interaction sociale au travers de l’urbanisme. Depuis quelques temps, il a commencé des recherches sur de grandes installations en acier.
Arne Quinze réalise son travail autour de l’idée qu’un jour une société idéale pourrait exister où chaque individu interagiraient et communiqueraient, dans le but de rassembler chaque personne à participer à un intense dialogue. Dans sa vision urbaine , les activités communautaires et la cohésion sociale seraient la norme. Ses installations sont conçues pour provoquer une réaction chez le passant et intervenir dans sa routine quotidienne en le confrontant à ses sculptures. Ses installations publiques non conventionnelles ont remis en question les perceptions des centres-villes de Belgique (Cityscape, The Sequence), d’Allemagne (The Traveller), de la France (Camille, Rock Strangers), du Liban (The Visitor), de la Chine (Red Beacon) et des États-Unis (Uchronia, Timegate), entre autres.
Dans chaque pays où Arne Quinze expose, il révèle un processus physique en dessinant son œuvre provenant d’un optimisme à toute épreuve qui lui est propre.
Chaque nouvelle génération créative lui permet d’approfondir sa recherche et son étude sur l’interaction et le mouvement urbain exprimant l’évolution continue de l’être humain et de son environnement. Outre la construction de sculptures architecturales, il crée des œuvres d’art complexes et des installations vidéo inscrivant sa vision dans la société de la façon dont les gens eux-mêmes et la société se voient. Ses œuvres telles que Bidonvilles , Stilthouses , Chaos et My Home My House My Stilthouse, My Secret Garden ont fait partie de nombreuses expositions à travers le monde.
