Über einen Tablet-PC können die Choreo­graphien ausgewählt sowie die Licht­­stimmung an verschiedene Räume und Funk­tionen angepasst werden. Das Design ist geprägt von einer klaren Formen­sprache. So erweckt die kinetische Leuchte den Eindruck frei im Raum schwebenden Lichts.
Die Leuchte Manta Rhei ist dank ihres modularen Aufbaus beliebig skalierbar.
Durch das Zusammenspiel von mechanischer Bewegung und Licht­animationen wird die klassische Typologie des Leuchten­designs erweitert. Basierend auf der Konzept­studie zu Manta Rhei soll in Zukunft eine Familie kinetischer Leuchten gemeinsam entwickelt werden.
Joachim Sauter von ART+COM stellt das Projekt am 18. April gemeinsam mit Klaus-Peter Siemssen von Selux auf der Light+Building vor. Das Gespräch über kinetische Ästhetik und die OLED-Leuchte beginnt um 14 Uhr in der Selux Lounge, Halle 3.1, B81.

With the filigree OLED-­based fixture named “Manta Rhei”, Selux and ART+COM present the first result results of their exploration into kinetic luminaires at the Light+Building fair.
The luminaire consists of 14 1.2-meter long, flexible metal lamellas each of which carries ten paper thin OLED-modules. Thin steel wires attach the blades to small motors hidden in the ceiling. Being individually controllable these motors move the lamellas ends up and down like wings, and permit the 2.4-meter wide fixtures body to perform different movement patterns, e.g. it can float like a manta ray.
The lamellas movements and the light animations are controlled both by a program that merges mechanical and light motions to a choreographed unity. One can select from a wide range of pre-programmed choreographies with the help of a tablet-PC, so that the light mood can be adjusted to suit any space or occasion. By using a custom-built intelligent control technology the overall quantity of light emitted from the fixture remains constant. The fixture makes use of minimalistic design language, and as a result it gives the impression of light freely hovering in space. Built of individually combinable modules, it can be scaled to different sizes.
Through the interplay of mechanic motions and dynamic light animations Manta Rhei expands the classical fixture typology and opens a new chapter in lighting. As a next step, and based on this initial concept study, a family of kinetic luminaires will be developed.

Attraverso la sinergia tra moderna tecnologia OLED, elettronica e sistemi di gestione, il produttore di apparecchi di illuminazione Selux e lo studio di progettazione ART+COM hanno scritto un nuovo capitolo dell’illuminazione professionale. I risultati del primo studio sugli apparecchi d’illuminazione cinetici sono stati presentati con il nome di «Manta Rhei», un sofisticato apparecchio di illuminazione basato su OLED che, sospeso nel locale, cambia continuamente in maniera silenziosa il proprio aspetto.
Il corpo dell’apparecchio, con una dimensione di 1,20 x 2,40 metri con 140 leggerissimi moduli OLED Tridonic, coniuga scenari di illuminazione individuali e movimentazioni. In tal modo l’apparecchio simula anche il leggero movimento di una razza manta. In questo modo, i valori di illuminazione rimangono stabili grazie alla gestione intelligente degli OLED. Ne scaturisce un affascinante legame tra gestione dell’illuminazione e cinetica.
Con Manta Rhei nasce un apparecchio di illuminazione che per la prima volta proietta intensità di illuminazione su una superficie adattando il rendimento delle singole componenti dell’apparecchio in base alla loro distanza. Ha così origine un apparecchio di illuminazione che appare dotato di vita propria e che racchiude in sé alcune eccellenze tecniche.
La scelta dei moduli OLED è caduta su Tridonic, dal momento che gli OLED stessi hanno convinto in materia di resa cromatica e design. Inoltre, la temperatura cromatica è considerevolmente costante e le superfici di illuminazione svolgono un’azione estremamente omogenea. I moduli LUREON REP sono stati ottimizzati in modo che le singole lastre funzionino in modo estremamente sofisticato come piccoli specchi quando l’apparecchio è spento. Di conseguenza, anche quando è spento, Manta Rhei si rivela un’interessante attrazione in qualsiasi ambientazione.
I moduli LUREON REP impiegati presentano una temperatura cromatica di 4000 K e 40 Im/W. I moduli convincono anche per lo sfruttamento ottimale delle superfici di illuminazione e a un CRI superiore a 80. Ogni singolo OLED, con ben 65.000 livelli di luminosità, si dimostra particolarmente sensibile in termini di puntamento. La potenza di illuminazione costante e le movimentazioni naturali assicurano una piacevole atmosfera.
Grazie all’unione di estetica cinetica e dinamica di illuminazione, le possibilità di illuminazione stessa conquistano una qualità tutta nuova. L’integrazione del movimento meccanico amplia la classica tipologia del design in materia di illuminazione e traccia un nuovo sentiero per l’impiego della tecnologia dei diodi organici ad emissione di luci.

By the mid-1980s an interdisciplinary group of designers, architects and artists coming from various departments of the Berlin University of the Arts and hackers from the ChaosComputerClub foresaw that the upcoming digital technology was not only a tool, but potentially a (mass) medium. Therefore ART+COM was founded as an non-profit organisation to explore the new mediums applied possibilities in the fields of art, design, science and technology.

In 1994 when ART+COM received commissions of commercial projects the organisation became officially a company with limited liability. Since 1998 the design studio is owned mainly by its employees, board members as well as the former organisation members.

From the very beginning ART+COM has pioneered the development of this medium, and has conceived and realized communication

formats, design principles and technologies that have become pervasive concepts in today’s world. Ranging from artistic installations and design-focused projects to technological innovations and inventions, ART+COM’s work includes different kinds of formats: Autoactive, reactive and interactive objects and installations, media-based environments and architectures.

Although often very complex, the projects are always driven by the content and not by the technology. Despite having grown and professionalised its operations, ART+COM remains dedicated to its original cause from 25 years ago: to design innovative and original projects to pave the way for the future of media-based communications.
