These stairs for a residential project (Sensualscaping) took us in an important new direction, harnessing digital production and fabrication to form a seamless and deeply sculptural experience. This page documents a component that we felt was rich enough in detail to merit further exploration and explanation.

The stair is a continuation and intensification of the simple graphic skirting board lines that trace their way through the house. As they turn the corner into the stair void, they expand like a genie released from a lamp, curling and separating and bifurcating from the wall to form the delicate edge of the stair treads, lifting into the air to rise as the veil of the balustrade. This veil hangs gently from above as a series of thin paired threads, softly pulled back at the entry to allow movement past, gently splaying around the corner to meet and carry the arriving visitor onwards & upwards.

Treppen dienen zuallererst einmal der Verbindung zwischen mehreren Ebenen eines Gebäudes. Dabei ist es eigentlich egal, wie sie aussehen, nur zweckmässig müssen sie sein. Dass eine Treppe aber auch von einem künstlerischen Gesichtspunkt her betrachtet und entwickelt werden kann, beweist das britische Atmos Studio:

Für das Projekt 080-23MR, ein Haus, das sehr viele bauliche Elemente mit geschwungenen Linien enthält, sollte eine Treppe diese von Atmos sensualscaping genannten Formen fortsetzen. Und so entstand eine digital entworfene und gefertigte Treppe, die mit ihrem Verlauf eine skulpturelle Form bildet, die fast zu leben scheint. Die geschwungenen Stufen sind auch im unter der Treppe liegenden Badezimmer zu sehen.

Das ganze Haus und vor allem die Treppe stellen eine gelungene Symbiose aus genau berechnetem Design, digitaler Fertigung und künstlerischen Ansprüchen dar und sind absolut sehenswert. Es muss schön sein, dort zu wohnen.

Niezwykła klatka schodowa została zaprojektowana i wykonana przy wykorzystaniu zaawansowanej technologii cyfrowej, jej elementy zostały wycięte z płyty MDF. Cała struktura zdaje się falować i zmieniać sprawiając nierzeczywiste wrażenie.

Per una Abitazione nel Quartiere Londinese Clapham, Atmos Studio – Londra, UK – ha progettato 081-23MR-STAIRS, una Scala Scultorea in Legno che rivisita in chiave contemporanea lo stile e la drammaticità dell’Art Nouveau.
Piuttosto spettacolare, 081-23MR-STAIRS sembra essere formata da una serie di fili appesi che delicatamente tirano, come fosse un velo, il bordo del pavimento per consentire il caratteristico movimento ondulatorio. Interamente progettata in Digitale, 081-23MR-STAIRS è un insieme intricato di Pezzi di Legno di Quercia altamente dettagliati, che hanno permesso in fase di taglio ed incisione il raggiungimento della quasi perfezione con elementi che si incastrano a formare un puzzle architettonico. Il viaggio dettagliato e sinuoso intrapreso da 081-23MR-STAIRS continua in tutta l’Abitazione in una armoniosità di linee, curve, salite e discese.
