Internationally acclaimed designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their eponymous studio in 1996 after graduating with Master’s degrees in Architecture from The Royal College of Art in London. From their first studio in Trellick Tower in London, they designed their first piece, the Loop Table, produced by Isokon in 1997. Much of Barber and Osgerby’s early work involved the folding and shaping of sheet material, influenced by the white card that they had used frequently in architectural model making. Plywood and perspex were used in the development of the Pilot Table, 1999, and Stencil Screen, 2000.

In 2004 the pair were awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize. This led to a commission to design new pieces for the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill On Sea. Known for their use of colour, with the limited edition Iris tables, Barber and Osgerby developed a new direction, using colour as the starting point for the work. The same year saw the launch of Tab for Flos, a return to the folded form. In 2009, Barber and Osgerby launched their first major commission for Murano glassmakers Venini which resulted in a series of unique, large-scale glass vases, created in limited editions and shown in Milan, Porto Cervo and London.

2010 saw the creation of an experimental installation for Sony at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. Through a series of conceptual objects that exploited Sony’s new sound technologies, a perspective was presented for how electronics could be better integrated within contemporary home interiors. Another investigation, this time into school furniture and how dynamic movement in a chair can aid concentration, resulted in the forward-tilting Tip Ton chair launched with Vitra in 2011. The same year, Barber and Osgerby were appointed to design the London 2012 Olympic Torch.

Barber and Osgerby’s research-led practice has developed collections for Vitra, B&B Italia, Venini, Cappellini, Magis, Swarovski, Flos and Established & Sons, whilst also producing edition furniture and one-off works for both private and public commissions. Both Honorary Doctors of Arts, Barber and Osgerby have lectured internationally and hosted workshops at Ecal, Switzerland, and the Vitra Design Museum. Their work is held in permanent collections around the world including the V&A Museum, London; New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art; London’s Design Museum; and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Alongside their eponymous studio, in 2001 Barber and Osgerby founded Universal Design Studio, now recognised as one of the world’s most innovative creative design consultancies working in architecture, interiors and exhibition design. The V&A will once again act as the hub to the festival that also sees exhibitions dotted around London. Highlights include British designers Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby collaborating with car company BMW for ‘Double Space for BMW – Precision & Poetry in Motion’ that will distort the view of the Raphael Gallery space and visitors perceptions through the choreographed movement of two giant reflective kinetic sculptures.

Značka BMW a dvojica Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby spoločne zdieľajú vášeň k vynaliezavému zmýšľaniu a nadčasovým materiálom. Toto dielo je výsledkom diskusie medzi dizajnérskymi tímami o tom, ako sa postaviť k úlohe v znamení spojenia precíznosti a poézie. Inštalácia umiestnená v jednej z najznámejších galérií múzea V&A, ktorá je domovom slávnych Raffaelových návrhov gobelínov zdobiacich Sixtínsku kaplnku, nabáda návštevníkov zahľadieť sa nahor, aktívne precítiť umenie aj priestor a stráviť s nimi čas. Odrazy obrovských Raffaelových malieb vytvárajú jedinečný priestor na osobitý zážitok nad plochou celkom 600 metrov štvorcových. „Vášnivo sa zaujímame o estetiku pohybu, fenomén, ktorý dizajnéri značky BMW pretvárajú do technickej precíznosti a poetického posolstva,“ hovorí Karim Habib, riaditeľ dizajnérskej divízie automobilov spoločnosti BMW. „Barber & Osgerby zachytávajú filozofiu dizajnu značky BMW vo forme kinetického diela: vďaka svojim mimoriadnym rozmerom inštalácia „Dvojitý priestor pre BMW“ v Raffaelovej galérii otvára nové perspektívy a zároveň buduje očarujúcu jednotu spojenia minulosti s prítomnosťou.“

München/London. Im Rahmen des London Design Festival 2014 wird BMW Design erneut seine Designkompetenz auf einem der weltweit bedeutendsten Designevents demonstrieren. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem BMW Design Team um Karim Habib und unter der Gesamtleitung von Adrian van Hooydonk entwickelt das britische Designduo Barber & Osgerby unter dem Leitmotiv “Präzision und Poesie” eine prachtvolle Installation. Diese wird – im Zuge der erweiterten Partnerschaft von BMW mit dem London Design Festival – in der beeindruckenden Raphael Galerie des Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) zu sehen sein. “Bei einem erfolgreichen Projekt kommt es immer auf die richtigen Partner an. BMW kennt sich nicht nur mit Design aus, BMW lebt Design”, sagt Ben Evans, Direktor des London Design Festivals. “Barber & Osgerby genießen zu Recht einen Ruf als feingeistige und innovative Designer. Das V&A ist das Museum für Design schlechthin und das London Design Festival ist bekannt für sein Design-Vergabeprogramm. Darum ist “Double Space for BMW” ein so sehenswertes Projekt.”

London Design Festival 2014 som pågår mellan 13-21 september är nu inne på sitt tolfte år och det kommer att firas med över 300 evenemang och installationer runt om i staden.

Utställningar på platser som Victoria och Albert Museum, samt en stor installation mitt på Trafalgar Square planeras. Sir John Sorrell, ordförande för London Design Festival berättar: ”Det är lätt att förlora sig i lyckan av alla evenemang, föredrag, fester, utställningar, lanseringar och installationer som London Design Festival innebär.”

”Design och kreativitet ligger inbäddat djupt i stadens DNA och är essentiell för Londons framtida välstånd, såväl som för hela England. Genom att bjuda in världens främsta talanger inom design, ges en inblick i hur vi ligger till idag, men allra viktigast, vart vi är påväg” säger Boris Johnson, Londons borgmästare.

Utställningen vid Trafalgar Square sker tillsammans med Airbnb, som är världens största marknadsplats för att lista eller boka boenden på nätet. Fyra stycken välkända designers har bjudits in för att skapa en ny slags tolkning av ett rum i ett hem som man inte vill lämna. Rummen kommer att uppföras som fyra separata strukturer mitt på Trafalgar Square, där alla är identiska på utsidan. Interiören återspeglar individualitet och personligheten av respektive designer, precis som en listning på Airbnb som är högst unik. De utvalda designerna är Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges and Studioilse.

På Victoria och Albert Museum kommer en installation för BMW av Barber & Osgerby visas i Raphael Gallery, tillsammans med andra intressanta projekt innehållande Drönare och självstyrande skulpturer.
