A Dutch artist Bert Simons takes paper folding art into the whole new level by creating hyper-realistic 3D paper sculptures.

The first step in his process of making a paper portrait is digitizing a model. Bert starts his work by putting a lot of points on his model’s face to have some reference when modeling. He then takes all the data into his computer where he reconstructs the face with Blender, the open source 3D program. After 3D modeling Bert goes back to 2D by flattening the texture and then printing everything out. Finally, he glues this incredibly complex 3D puzzle and turns it into hyper-realistic portraits.
Paper portrait and wearable mask of Mr. Ivo Opstelten, Mayor of Rotterdam 1999-2008. Last 2 months I spent working on this portrait, well 248 hours in total. Besides the paper portrait I also made an wearable mask which features in a short documentary by Jup de Heer on Mr. Opstelten.

Dutch artist Bert Simons has discovered a way to create very life like 3-D sculptures out of paper. He first maps his subjects’ faces using sophisticated tracking technology and feeds the data into a computer. Then using some special software he constructs the subject’s contour and then print their form on paper before putting it together using glue.

A native of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Bert Simons creates three-dimensional sculpture portraits of people – using only paper and glue. With the help of 3D rendering programs on the computer, these realistic and life-like sculptures are both eerie and fascinating.

On his website, Simons describes his art as: “3 dimensional pseudo realistic paper portraits and sculptures. These are papercraft sculptures made in the same way as the familiar papercraft houses and animals.”

When asked about the reasoning behind his inspiration, he says:

In 2006, when the answer to my ‘mid-life crisis’ question ‘what will remain of me?’ came close to: ‘ ….nothing,’ I decided to clone myself to change the odds.

The process behind his designs or ‘clones’ is quite complex and time consuming. First he sculpts his subjects’ head in 3D using a special rendering program on the computer. This, he says, is the hardest part. Then he uses photographs to give it texture and continues to model it until it looks like the person. His 3D images are flattened out onto printable pieces of paper that he painstakingly glues together.

There is even a link on his site where viewers can ‘Build your own Bert’ and download his flattened 3D portrait. It is a 12-page PDF that he recommends printing on 80 grams or thicker paper. It is to be cut out, glued together, and the resulting image is a portrait sculpture of the artist himself.

Bert rozpoczyna pracę umieszczając dużo punktów na portretowanym modelu twarzy, by mieć jakieś odniesienie podczas modelowania. Nanosi wszystkie dane na swoim komputerze, gdzie rekonstruuje twarz i drukuje powstały w ten sposób projekt. Następnie zaczyna kleić tę niezwykle złożoną zagadkę i zamienia ją w hiper-realistyczny portret.
