Originally from Orange County, California, re-locating to Brooklyn last year, photographer Brian Vu’s work has been called both “stark” and “sun-drenched”. First exploring the medium as a teenager with a point-and-shoot, he has likened his obsession with photography to others’ pursuit of drink and drugs. Not one for the spontaneous shot, his images are the result of careful composition. The effect is disquieting. Following a series of collages, True False is his first still project for a while. “It’s aesthetic is best described as praying to god on an acid trip,” he says. “It’s a reflection on my life through anonymous portraits and biographical still life images. These photos were shot between California and New York. After visiting home, it’s shown me how much I’ve changed throughout the course of a year.” An ongoing series Vu hopes to publish one day in book form, he says: “I’m really hoping people will keep them by their bedsides whenever they awake from a nightmare.”
