Cedric Andrieux and Jerome Bel
source: pushfestivalca
The slyly brilliant work of Jérome Bel returns to Vancouver with a beautifully spare and poetic evening of dance and autobiographical storytelling, created in collaboration with, and performed by, French dancer Cédric Andrieux. Reflecting on a rich career that included eight rigorous years with Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Andrieux gives a rare, moving and humorous insider’s view into a dancer’s life, performing extracts of work by major choreographers including Cunningham, Trisha Brown and Philippe Tréhet.
Cédric Andrieux is the most recent in a series of insightful portraits that centre on the lives of preeminent dancers. Others in the series include: Véronique Doisneau of the corps de ballet of the Paris Opéra (2004); Isabel Torres, ballerina of the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro (2005) and Pichet Klunchun, a Thai classical dance artist (2005).
>>The passage in which Andrieux enacts Cunningham’s requests and his own responses is breathtaking… This section shows us dance from the inside.<< New York Times
Paris-based choreographer Jérome Bel has become somewhat of a legend in the Vancouver dance scene following Pichet Klunchun and myself (VIDF 2009) and The Show Must Go On (PuSh 2010). His provocative, ironic, and anti-theatrical productions have garnered both controversy and acclaim worldwide.

In this illuminating solo work, leading French choreographer Jérôme Bel asks veteran dancer Cédric Andrieux to reflect on his life as a dancer and confront the question of what drives him as an artist. Integrating excerpts created by renowned choreographers like Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown, Bel incorporates spoken word and movement, providing in intimate look at Andrieux’s career, narrated and danced by Andrieux himself.
Andrieux was a featured dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Lyon Opera Ballet, has also worked with RoseAnne Spradlin and Chantal Yzermans, and was part of the New York cast of Alain Buffard’s Mauvais Genre. Cédric Andrieux is an intimate portrait of this acclaimed dancer that offers us remarkable insights into the iconic image of “the performer” as only Bel can.
Born in Paris in 1962, Jérôme Bel studied at the Centre National de Dance Contemporaine of Angers and went on to dance for myriad choreographers in France and Italy. He is a significant figure in a group of contemporary European choreographers who question the fundamental parameters of their own practice—and of choreography in general.
Bel is acclaimed for a unique provocation to strip away all stage artifice in an effort to create a more honest connection between the watchers and performers. His conceptual work is focused on altering expectations and his productions are legendary for stretching the boundaries of the philosophical underpinnings of dance.
