Charlotte Van Wouwe is een beeldend kunstenares met een fascinatie voor muziek. Haar werk bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit glas. Met haar glazen blaasinstrumenten verbond ze glas en muziek. Ze vormde het kwartet Soplarte (Soplar is Spaans voor blazen) met Berlinde Deman, Marie-Anne Standaert en Bart Maris. Samen ontwikkelden ze een sterk visueel én auditief project dat in première ging tijdens Festival van Vlaanderen Gent 2009. Van Wouwe verrast het publiek met de broosheid van glas en de sterkte van het geluid.

Soplarte arose, autumn 2008, from Charlotte van Wouwe’s urge to bring sound and image together. This resulted in the first glass blowing wind instruments. Experienced musicians were asked to participate to look into the possibilities of the instruments. After several months, the quartet released its first performance at Espace Ladda and Arts Centre Vooruit.
The study went on, and after an intense period of improvisation, Charlotte brought the capabilities of the tools into a map and gave it in the hands of two composers. Each with a different perspective and their own vocabulary wrote a composition for Soplarte, who were brought several times, including at the Festival of Flanders.
Out of necessity to enrich the aural palette, new tools were developed for two people, a blazer and a voice. This double use of the instrument creates an extra dimension of intimate space. The breath of the players are connected and influence each other. The performers are moving in space during the interaction, taking distance, approach each other, and thus create a visual-spatial counterpart of the musical path that they travel.
During the residence at FLACC, a structure was designed that would allow instruments to be placed in an open space, to be played from within this very installation. The musicians move in-between the instruments and the unplayed instruments remain visual elements in the performance.

In May 2011, in continuation of the Transit and FLACC-supported project, the construction was used at “EMAF”, a festival for the audio-visual arts in Osnabrück, Germany. Here, Charlotte worked together with German musicians of the conservatory and the young composer Stefan Nagler, who also wrote pieces for this new performance. These now form part of the standard repertoire of Soplarte.

Soplarte is een project van glaskunstenares en muzikante Charlotte Van Wouwe. Ze creëert prachtige glazen blaasinstrumenten die haar en onder meer muzikante Berlinde Deman, Marie Anne Standaert en Bart Maris tot wonderbaarlijke muziek en composities inspireren.

DOK krijgt de Belgische premiere van de ‘Soplarte Osnabrueck compositie’ gecreëerd tijdens een uitwisseling met het conservatorium, mogelijk gemaakt door het EMAF (Europian Media Art Festival).

SOPLARTE – glazen blaasinstrumenten. De ranke conische vormen en de verscheidenheid in grootte en curves zijn evenzeer het resultaat van de experimenten van de glasblaaster Charlotte Van Wouwe als van de wil van de materie zelf: niet alleen de glasblaaster leidt het glas, ook omgekeerd geldt dit.

Met hun conische uitlopende buis en glazen mondstuk gebaseerd op dat van trompetten zijn de instrumenten verwant aan de allereerste ventielloze trompetten of etnische blaasinstrumenten. De klank is echter door de materie volstrekt uniek: helder en hees tegelijk, met een kleurspectrum dat gaat van vol-warm naar messcherp.Elk instrument heeft door zijn unieke grootte een eigen grondtoon. De speler kan door blaastechniek en lipstand een beperkte reeks boventonen produceren.

Met het ensemble Soplarte brengt Charlotte Van Wouwe een performance, deels improvisatie deels compositie, waarin de klankmogelijkheden en melodische beperkingen van deze instrumenten telkens opnieuw worden verkend.
