‘Black Box’ presents a black wooden volume that is suspended in the exhibition space. The base of the object shows a hollow in the shape of a skull. When the visitor enters this cavity with his head, the status of the object switches into that of an interface.

This device contains eight transducers which transfer spatialized audio onto the skull when in contact. The audio is invasive: the acoustic environment is rearranged across the limited space of one’s head in such a way that after a while nothing lasts but two milliseconds of the original realtime sample. What is left is a click that will hop across the inner side of your skull.

The work can be situated in De Boeck’s ongoing exploration of sound as a manifestation of vibration, whether it travels through air or through solids. It definitely is the most intimate of sound spaces, after a series of large-scale work over the period 2005-2012.

Christoph De Boeck creates visual installation work in which sound resides as an articulation of energy. Transducer elements are applied to resonating surfaces like steel sheets and sound sources are spatially arranged in order to arrive at an image that is both visually and sonically coherent. This image could be a public space transformed by sound waves or an autonomous object in an art space.

The spectral nature of sound as a permeating and tactile presence that remains elusive and invisible has informed most of the content of this work. De Boeck invests in the physical aspects of acoustic energy with a framework that is different per project, be it neurological, ecological or digital.

From 2002 to 2012 Christoph De Boeck was a founding member of the Brussels based interdisciplinary collective Deepblue.

In 2013 De Boeck joined Aernoudt Jacobs to co-direct Overtoon, a platform for sound art located in Brussels. Apart from producing the work of both names, Overtoon wants to support artists and give new impulses to the field of sound and media art.
Overtoon offers yearly long-term residencies to artists with the aim to produce their works. Selected artists can make use of a workspace in the centre of Brussels, tools which facilitate the production process related to audio/media art, technical expertise, production and financial support and a broad international network.

Overtoon is supported by the Flemish authorities and the Commission of the Flemish Community (VGC) in Brussels.
