Statement: Large-scale magnified fragments, cropped enclosed formats, super-sized “details”, of portraits of both the artist’s acquaintances and loved ones, dead creatures, and nightmarish visions – all made both beautiful and simultaneously repulsive – characterize the ambitious paintings of Cindy Wright. Through her engagement with formal histories and genres of art (particularly those of her native Belgian’s combined Flemish and Dutch heritage) and through the solidifying relationship of the photographic image, she has expanded her treatment of one of art’s oldest and grandest themes: Mortality. The cropping and scale of these compelling explorations reference the narrative genres of theater and film but maintain the necessary obliqueness and mystery even within their directness – an odd dichotomy that she manages to pull off when it could all so easily fall into the trap of melodrama. From the abstraction of familiarity – when standing close to the work – to the clarity of distance – when the trompe l’oeil effect comes into play – her painting’s strange magic transforms the perceptual experience via a gestalt shift in the manner of recognition. Wright’s powerful works act like an inverted experience for Tantalus – we are rewarded both up close and far away. As we reach out we are laden with the fruits and water of abstraction and hyper-realism. Yet contained within this is the dilemma of a dichotomy there is a very appropriate existential moment of alienation too, inclusion and exclusion simultaneously. As one approaches the work it disappears into abstraction, forever out of reach, beyond our abilities to bridge the gap. Non narrative though they may be, and often as decontextualized from a story as possible, they are then presented to us in full isolated objecthood – the Being of existentialism – a cold hard look at what is and will be. The captured image – fully cognizant of its temporality and transience – acts as concrete factuality as much as the symbolic or metaphoric. Seeing the trajectory of time irrevocably march onwards in the minutiae of daily life, with an eye constantly alerted to the potentials for the transcribing of these mini-events into the Grand Theme of her painting, Wright reflects upon the existential hope of capturing and distilling an ever changing moment. Her idealistic, but also realistic, endeavor to spotlight these snapshots of the ephemeral factuality of things helps clear our eyes of the noise surrounding us to allow a clarity to the frozen moment. A seriousness of purpose surrounds Wright’s paintings. They contain the paradox of being both detached and objective but also heart rendered and intimate. Shining through the solemn contemplation in these works is a small fire of existential hope, the flame kept alive by the very practice of the activity of painting – its own salvation perhaps?
