This installation consists of dozens of hand tools suspended in air, pointing outward as though in mid-explosion. Ortega bought the tools at a Berlin flea markets. It was part of the “That Was Then … This Is Now” exhibit, an effort to extend the activist spirit of the Vietnam War protest days into the Iraq war era.

Damián Ortega creates mind-blowing sculptures suspended in mid-air. His breakout hit, called Cosmic Thing, was created in 2002 and featured in the Venice Biennale in 2003. Художник разместил в воздухе рабочие инструменты. Они, словно бы, остановлены в точке хаотического опасного падения. Но сам факт зависания тяжелых предметов в толще пустоты придает им системную упорядоченность, структурную завершенность кажущегося хаоса.

Мексиканский художник Дамиан Ортега представляет в PinchukArtCentre экспозицию «Инструментальный бит». Популярная в искусстве тема всепоглощающей урбанизации и тоски по живой природе воплощена у него в работе, давшей название выставке. Ортега показывает зрителю этапы создания колеса из металлической болванки – инсталляция включает в себя четыре объекта разной степени готовности, в последнем из которых живут золотые рыбки. Работа «Моисей» – это симфония рабочих и садовых инструментов, поиск эстетики в простых вещах. Подвешенные в воздухе параллельно друг другу, эти инструменты в совокупности формируют два крыла. «Девять типов местности» – серия видео, на которых выстроенные в ряд кирпичи падают один за другим, поваливая следующий в ряду. Медитативное зрелище, умноженное на девять проекторов в зале. «Проект социальной жизни» – еще одна инсталляция из четырех объектов: выложенные из кирпичиков-этажей строения символизируют тесные, но совершенные по форме здания будущего. Символика цифр очень важна для художника – серия ландшафтов из расплавленного свинца, алюминия, бронзы называется «Температура плавления», и снова включает в себя именно девять объектов.

Damián Ortega transita entre suportes variados, discutindo os limites da criação artística ao subverter os significados e funções de objetos cotidianos como tijolos, cadeiras, relógios ou carros. O artista altera, decompõe e transforma os objetos, revelando seus componentes implícitos e simbólicos e criando formas híbridas. Em paralelo, conduz uma investigação sobre formas escultóricas fundamentais, como o cubo minimalista construído com materiais banais ou mesmo desconstruído ou deformado.
