Il fotografo David Graham è nato ad Abington in Pennsylvania, negli Stati Uniti, nel 1952.
Acquistò la sua prima macchina fotografica nel 1979 e da allora, con costanza e per 35 anni, ha fotografato gli Stati Uniti facendo ritratti alle persone, documentando i paesaggi, e raccontando usi e costumi attraverso le forme popolari di fotografia americana dall’istantanea, al ritratto di famiglia, fino alla foto di vacanza.

La maggior parte delle immagini appartenenti al suo archivio sono scattate a colori e sembrano essere cartoline di un viaggio lungo una vita. Graham, spinto dalla curiosità, ha cercato storie e visioni e con ironia le ha registrate con la macchina fotografica.
Il fotografo, in un’intervista per Daylight racconta al critico W.M. Hunt che nel corso della sua carriera ha creato un linguaggio molto personale che ancora oggi usa per fotografare e che, nonostante nel corso del tempo abbia cambiato le macchine fotografiche e la tecnologia – Ha cominciato con una 8×10 per poi passare ad un medio formato e oggi lavora con il digitale – il suo modo di registrare il mondo non è cambiato.
David Graham ha lavorato per diverse importanti testate dal New York Times a Harper’s Magazine, passando per il New Yorker e il Philadelphia Inquirer.
Ha esposto in diversi importanti musei ed istituzioni tra cui l’International Center of Photography di New York e, per qualche giorno, le sue fotografie saranno esposte alla Gallery 339 di Philadelphia.
Ha prodotto diversi libri fotografici: Only in America (1991), Land of the Free (1999), American Beauty (1987), Taking Liberties (2001) e Declaring Independence (2004).

David Graham is a photographer living in three worlds. He makes his own work, which is his first love. This work has been published in seven books, including American Beauty (Aperture 1987), Only in America (Knopf 1991), Alone Together (Pond Press 2003) and Almost Paradise (Pond Press 2008). He is represented by the PDNB Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and Gallery 339 in Philadelphia. David also works in the freelance world, shooting for magazines including The New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Forbes and Details. Additionally, he has shot ad campaigns, most notably for Mastercard. Lastly, David teaches photography; he has taught at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Sarah Lawrence College, the International Center of Photography in NYC, and he is a professor here at the University of the Arts.

Artist Statement
David, a documentary photographer who has tirelessly traversed this country, wearing out three Volvos while making thousands of photographs and hundreds of friends. He has been unable to stop searching the country for the odd, unusual and colorful. His quest has taken him from back roads to backyards to bathrooms. He has found Americans at their finest, coast to coast. His engaging and joyous photographs tell us what it means to be an American and to be proud of it.

Photographer David Graham has spent years traveling across the American landscape in search for the surreal and bizarre. Strange signs, discarded advertising statues, hurricane carnage and debris, over-sized roadside attractions and abandoned toys all make a surprise appearance. Awesome work.
